About Colonist
What is Colonist?
Colonist runs Colonist.io, the biggest free digital board game platform on the internet — last year the community spent the equivalent of 3,037 years playing 60M games. Founded in 2018, the company offers a free Settlers of Catan alternative plus single-player and multiplayer modes, ranked games, leaderboards and a membership system funding ongoing development.
Where will I work?
Colonist is fully remote, with team members spread across multiple continents (the company is registered in Portugal). Engineering, design and operations all work asynchronously — there are no required office hours and no mandated overlap windows.
What is the Colonist team like?
A tight team of approximately 26 people building polished, multi-platform digital board games. The company explicitly hires for clear, structured written communication because so much of the day-to-day work happens async. Future plans include a friends system, seasonal prizes, and a mobile app.
Work-Life Balance
From Colonist's actual job descriptions: Working Hours: We work asynchronously and value outcomes over hours. And: Async culture; deep work, no performative meetings. The schedule is genuinely set by the individual — Colonist measures impact, not hours logged.
Perks and Benefits
Fully remote across continents, async-first culture, work on a beloved gaming product with millions of players, ownership over schedule and output.
