About Center for Global Development
What is the Center for Global Development?
The Center for Global Development (CGD) is an independent, nonpartisan research institution and 501(c)(3) organization. It works "to reduce global poverty and improve lives through innovative economic research that drives better policy and practice by the world's top decision makers". Founded in November 2001, it focuses today on AI for global development, climate and energy, development effectiveness, education and child well-being, gender equality and inclusion, global health policy, market shaping, migration and displacement, and sustainable development finance. It is also the institutional home of the Market Shaping Accelerator, a collaboration with the University of Chicago and Dartmouth that designs pull incentives such as advance market commitments and prizes. CGD has incubated initiatives like the Energy for Growth Hub and Labor Mobility Partnerships, publishes every grant and gift it receives over $30,000, and does not accept funding that would restrict its research independence.
Where will I work?
CGD has two offices: Washington, DC, and London, home to CGD Europe, a separate UK charity. US staff work hybrid, with everyone "required to be in the office at least three days per week", and CGD is registered to employ staff living in DC, Maryland and Virginia. Some roles involve domestic and occasional international travel. On 4dayweek.io we list CGD's US roles, which is where the package below applies.
What is the CGD team like?
CGD hires across economics, policy, communications and administration, and it occasionally offers post-doctoral fellowships and internships. It aims for a work environment that is "fun, collegial, and rich with opportunities for intellectual and professional growth for all staff", and its stated values include intellectual rigor, transparency, "mutual respect, a collegial workplace, and a healthy sense of humor". Social life includes sports leagues, ping pong and happy hours, and its postings note that applications are reviewed by people, with no AI or automated filters.
Work-Life Balance
Full-time US employees get "6 weeks PTO per year" and "15 paid holidays per year", 45 days off in all, plus a generous, fully paid parental leave benefit. The hybrid schedule leaves up to two days a week at home.
