What is the Cariboo Regional District?
The Cariboo Regional District is the regional government of BC's central interior — an area of ranchland, forest and lake country nearly the size of Ireland, stretching from Williams Lake and Quesnel to 100 Mile House. Formed in 1968, it delivers planning, utilities, fire protection, waste management, libraries and community services to about 62,000 residents across four municipalities and twelve rural electoral areas, from its head office in Williams Lake.
Where will I work?
At the district office at Suite D, 180 Third Avenue North in Williams Lake, BC — with occasional travel across the region (the district's own adverts say exactly that). This is in-person public service in one of BC's most affordable and outdoorsy regions: the district pitches the Cariboo lifestyle — lakes, trails and real housing prices — as part of the package.
What is the Cariboo Regional District team like?
A compact regional-government team — planners, engineers, utilities and protective-services staff plus administration — small enough that an Associate Planner works directly with communities across a dozen electoral areas. An honest note: an employer this small in a rural region has no meaningful review-site footprint, so we can't report a work-life-balance rating; the schedule below is printed in the district's own postings, which is the evidence we rely on.
Work-Life Balance
The district's adverts state the schedule precisely: "This position works a 9-day fortnight schedule, Monday - Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm with a 45-minute unpaid lunch break with every other Monday off." That works out to roughly a 35-hour average week — a genuinely reduced schedule, with a three-day weekend every second week (the Cariboo takes its Mondays, not Fridays). The Manager of Utilities posting repeats it: a "designated day off (‘DDO’) every other week".
