About Cardiff Metropolitan University

What is Cardiff Metropolitan University?

Cardiff Metropolitan University is a university in Cardiff, Wales, with two campuses, Llandaff and Cyncoed. Its job postings say "Dating back to 1865, we remain rooted in Wales with a global reach". Its recruitment site says "Cardiff Met was the first university in Wales to be designated as a University of Sanctuary", and that its values are "creativity, innovation, inclusivity and trust". Its schools cover Art & Design, Education & Social Policy, Management, Sport & Health Sciences and Technologies, and its professional and support roles sit in units such as Registry Services, Digital & Library Services, Strategic Planning and Projects and Research & Innovation.

Where will I work?

On 2026-10-18 the 12 vacancies open to external applicants were at the Llandaff Campus (11) and the Cyncoed Campus (1), both in Cardiff. Postings say "We offer family friendly and flexible working arrangements". The Flexible Working Policy Statement, approved in October 2023, lists "a nine-day fortnight, annualised hours, a mixture of office based and remote working" among the options, but it also says "the ability to operate permanently in a hybrid model is still being reviewed", and that flexibility is applied according to the needs of each post. Treat remote or compressed working as something to ask about, not something the roles promise.

What is the Cardiff Met team like?

The University says its behaviours are "leadership, courage, accountability and agility". It runs six staff networks (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic, Disabled, International, LGBTQ+, Welsh Language and Women's), and the careers site says "Networks meet formally at least once a term". A Working Welsh scheme supports staff who want to learn Welsh. The board on 2026-10-18 included a Data Migration Analyst, a Tester and a Technical Business Analyst for the Student Record System Programme, a Registry Advisor, a Digital Skills Developer, a Senior Technician in Biomedical Sciences and three roles at the ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre. The salary ranges on ten of the postings ran from £29,588 to £61,759 a year, and the site says "You can easily find our salary ranges displayed on each job advert".

Work-Life Balance

The careers site says "We offer a generous amount of annual leave which, depending on your position, is either 25 days, going up to 30 days after 1 year of service, or 35 days' annual leave" and adds 12 bank holiday and concessionary days for all staff. For grades 1 to 5 that is 37 days in the first year and 42 after, and for grades 6 to 9 it is 47 days, all pro rata for part-time staff. Maternity leave runs up to 52 weeks, with "13 weeks at normal contractual weekly earnings" and "26 weeks at 50% of normal contractual weekly earnings plus Statutory Maternity Pay"; paternity leave is up to two weeks, with "2 weeks of occupational paternity pay" after 52 weeks of service. Shared parental, adoption and parental leave policies sit alongside these.

Perks and Benefits

Pensions depend on the role: "Local Government Pension Scheme, Teachers Pension Scheme, or the Universities Superannuation Scheme". Staff get "Free family access to our independent specialist wellbeing support provider, Health Assured", free eye care vouchers with contributions towards eye care, and subsidised membership of the Met Active sports and fitness facilities on both campuses. The Met Rewards app earns loyalty points in the University's cafes and restaurants, and the campuses have a chaplaincy, prayer rooms and parenting rooms. Development runs through the Professional Learning & Development Academy, with a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Academic Practice for academic staff.
