About Burnetts Solicitors

What is Burnetts Solicitors?

Burnetts Solicitors is a law firm in Cumbria and Newcastle. Its homepage says it provides "expert legal advice for businesses, families and individuals across Cumbria, Newcastle and the North of England" and calls it "one of the largest law firms in the North of England". Its practice areas include agri and estates, banking and property finance, commercial dispute resolution, commercial property, construction, corporate, employment law, family law, medical negligence, serious injury, residential property, and wills, trusts and probate. The About page traces the firm to James Burnett, who "started the firm towards the end of the 19th Century", and says it became Burnetts in the late 1960s as it developed specialist departments. The firm says it is a Certified B Corporation, and its postings say it was "ranked 23rd in the Top 100 UK's Best Workplaces" in 2025 by Great Place to Work.

Where will I work?

Burnetts has offices in Carlisle, Cockermouth, Hexham, Kendal and Newcastle, and its vacancies page recruits "for our offices in Cumbria and Newcastle". Its postings name the office or offices a role covers, for example Carlisle and Cumbria, or Carlisle or Newcastle. Its benefits list "Flexible working (for eligible roles)", and one posting asks for "access to a car, as occasional travel to other sites will be required". The pages do not describe remote or hybrid working beyond that, so this profile treats Burnetts as an office-based firm.

What is the Burnetts team like?

The firm's three values are "Progressive, Together, Balanced", and its managing partner writes that "it's all about the People". The Our Team page lists its partners and heads of department, who it says "shape the direction and future of our firm", and says its aim is "to be approachable, down to earth and to go that extra mile". Its vacancy pages, all still online on 2026-10-18, cover employment and medical negligence solicitors, an IT trainer, a head of HR, a head of risk and compliance and a caretaker, and each says "30 days holiday". Graduates can join through a two-year Solicitor Training Contract, the SQE route with qualifying work experience, a six-year Level 6 Solicitor Apprenticeship or a work experience scheme. The interview process is two interviews, one short one on capability and a longer one on "how you fit with our values and culture".

Work-Life Balance

The Wellbeing page says "We offer 30 days holiday for everyone, plus bank holidays", pro-rated for part-time staff, which is 38 days a year with England's eight bank holidays. It adds a day off on your birthday on top of the 30 days, flexible working "to ensure you have a positive work/life balance", and enhanced maternity and paternity leave and pay. One posting says "30 days holiday and Private Medical Health Insurance; in addition, we will even give you your birthday off every year". The vacancies page said "We don't have any vacancies at the moment" on 2026-10-18, so no role was open that day.

Perks and Benefits

Burnetts lists pension matching up to 5%, private medical insurance with medical history disregarded, life cover of three times gross annual salary, dental and optical cashback, a free flu vaccination and free tea, coffee and fruit. Its Thrive! platform covers financial, mental and physical wellbeing. Teams get an annual team day chosen by the team, and the firm holds events including a Christmas party, a Summer Event and the Burnetts Conference. Through its charitable Thrive Fund, set up in 2024 with two community foundations, the firm says it awarded 21 grants to school pupils totalling over 21 thousand pounds.
