About Brown University
What is Brown University?
Brown University is a nonprofit research university in Providence, Rhode Island. Its About page says "Founded in 1764, Brown is a leading nonprofit research university" that is "distinct for its student-centered learning and deep sense of purpose". This profile covers the staff postings on its Workday careers site: regular, full-time, non-union staff on the standard grade scale, not faculty, fixed-term, seasonal, union, public-safety or clinical roles.
Where will I work?
The staff site listed 105 postings on 2026-10-20, 76 of them full-time. This page lists the 51 that are regular staff on the standard grade scale; the 25 left out are 13 fixed-term postings, six union-rate trades and dining roles, two public-safety roles, a library-grade role and three clinical ones. Titles include "Director of FP&A and Finance Business Partners", "Lead Network Engineer", "Research Finance Senior Accountant", "Senior Paid Media Specialist" and "Major Gifts Officer", and the postings state no pay range. Each posting names its Position Work Location: 40 of the 51 are hybrid, three are remote and eight are on-site or unstated. The postings say "The designated Position Work Location for each position determines the approved modality of work", and remote staff must live "in a state where Brown University is registered to do business".

Non-exempt staff accrue "75 hours (10 days) per year" for their first two years and "180 hours (24 days) per year" after. The Holiday Schedule lists 15 paid holidays in calendar 2026, including two Employee Appreciation Days, the day after Memorial Day, Election Day and Christmas Eve, and "Non-union staff who are eligible for paid holidays receive one floating holiday (or equivalent hours) each calendar year". The Winter Break page adds six paid days in 2026 ("December 23, 28, 29, 30, 31 and January 4") that "do not count against an employee's vacation balance". A new exempt staff member therefore has 24 vacation days, 15 holidays and six winter-break days, 45 in 2026, and a new non-exempt one 10, 15 and six, 31; sick time is separate, and exempt staff accrue 12 days a year. Summer hours are "optional at the departmental level": when a department runs them, "eligible full-time regular and fixed-term staff may work a 35-hour workweek (8 a.m. to 4 p.m., including a one-hour lunch) with no change in pay", this year from May 27 to August 7. The Flexible Work page lists a "Compressed Workweek: A standard 37.5-hour workweek completed in fewer than five days" but says "Availability varies by department and position.
