About Brookings Institution

What is the Brookings Institution?

Brookings says it "equips decisionmakers with nonpartisan research and policy strategies to create a more prosperous and secure country and world." Its About page names four goals: "Develop economic growth strategies for a changing world", "Expand economic and social opportunity for all", "Revitalize U.S. democratic institutions" and "Advance peace and security worldwide". It says the "quality, independence, and impact of our research" is at the core of its mission, and that it has "been at the forefront of public policy for more than a century." Its work is organized into research programs including Governance Studies, Economic Studies, Foreign Policy, Global Economy and Development, and Brookings Metro, and it publishes books, podcasts and events alongside its research.

Where will I work?

Its benefits page lists a "Hybrid Work Model" and "Alternative Work Arrangements". Its postings of 9 October 2026 mostly say "This position is hybrid", explaining that "Hybrid positions combine regular in-person presence at our Washington, DC office with the option of two days of remote work each week". One posting sets "a minimum expectation of 3 days per week onsite" at the Massachusetts Avenue office. The director of safety and security role is different: it "requires regular in-person work on site 4-5 days a week and is not eligible for regular telework". Its postings cover research and non-research roles, from finance and investments to media relations and development.

What is the team like?

Its culture page describes "a community of respect, inclusion, and engagement" and says the institution values "fair and transparent business practices, clear communication, mutual respect, and a collaborative atmosphere". Its careers page invites people to "plug into the groundbreaking and substantive research that takes place every day", and the benefits page lists employee-led affinity groups, internal professional networks, volunteer opportunities and recreational sports teams.

Work-Life Balance

Its benefits page lists "5 Weeks Paid Vacation", "3 Weeks Sick Leave" and "12 Paid Holidays": 37 days of vacation and holidays before sick leave. It calls the package "among the best offered by nonprofit organizations", pairing "generous time off" with "workplace flexibility", and adds paid family leave for birth, adoption or foster care placement, or care of a family member.
