About British International Investment

What is British International Investment?

British International Investment (BII) calls itself "the UK's leading development finance institution, wholly owned by the UK Government". The postings give its scale as "Over 75 years" of supporting business growth in developing and emerging markets, "More than £9.9 billion" in net assets, "1,600+" businesses invested in and "650+" people in its global team. Its careers page says it invests "for impact, helping to create more productive, sustainable and inclusive economies in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean by supporting private sector growth and innovation". BII is "a public limited company incorporated in England and Wales", registered number 3877777.

Where will I work?

The UK office is at "123 Victoria Street" in London SW1E 6DE, and the contact page says BII "has offices at 8 locations across Africa, Asia and London", listing addresses in places such as Nairobi, Mumbai, Sandton, Lagos and Singapore. On 2026-10-19 the board listed three postings, all in the CFO Office and all located "United Kingdom, London": an Azure Data Engineer, a Valuations Associate and a 12-month fixed-term Fund Operations Associate. The graduate programme pack reads "Location: London, with a 3-month international secondment". Neither the postings nor the careers pages state an office-attendance or hybrid pattern or a weekly hour count, so this profile does not claim one.

What is the BII team like?

The culture page says "BII has a high-accountability, high-performance culture" built on "a mix of shared purpose, collaboration and open, healthy debate", with "a flat hierarchy that empowers people to step up and join in". Its values are "Impact-led, commercially rigorous", "Tenacious in the face of challenges" and "Collaborative and caring". It says "Unlike most DFIs, we are a truly international institution with a diverse group of people from a range of national and cultural backgrounds", and the graduate pack describes "a growing team of around 650". The postings describe a workplace that "balances high performance with a strong emphasis on wellbeing".

Work-Life Balance

Two of BII's own documents give the same leave figure. Its Remuneration Framework (January 2022) lists "38 days paid leave including public holidays (where these fall on a work day)", and its graduate programme pack (a 2024 start) lists "38 days annual leave, including bank holidays". The framework adds "Sabbaticals lasting up to one month for employees with five years' service, and three months for those with ten years' service". On flexibility the careers page says "We believe in giving people the flexibility and freedom to work in the way that works best for them. So we offer a generous set of benefits and HR policies designed to promote your wellbeing and work-life balance." Today's postings do not repeat the leave figure, so it is as dated as those two documents.

Perks and Benefits

The framework lists "Life assurance cover, which will pay a lump sum equivalent to between four and eight times annual salary in the event of death", "Permanent health insurance", "Private medical insurance which can include cover for family members" and an "Employee Assistance Programme, a global support line for employees offering anonymised advice". The graduate pack adds "Mental wellbeing support, including talking therapies", an "Onsite GP", a "Cycle to work scheme", an "Interest free season ticket loan", a "Pension scheme" and a "Buddy/mentor scheme", with a graduate starting salary of "£47,500".
