About Bowling Green State University
What is Bowling Green State University?
Bowling Green State University is a public university in Bowling Green, Ohio, founded in 1910. Its About page says it was "Founded by the state, for the state, as a teacher-training institution", describes "two campuses totaling 1,132 acres and 107 buildings", and calls BGSU "the largest employer in Wood County": "In 2021, Forbes ranked BGSU as the No. 3 midsize employer in the United States". This profile covers the university's administrative staff postings on its GovernmentJobs.com careers board, not faculty, classified, student-worker or technical ones.
Where will I work?
The board listed 88 postings on 2026-10-20. Each bulletin carries a pay grade, and this page lists the 15 full-time ones of an administrative staff grade, 350 to 363 on the university's Administrative Staff Pay Ranges page, leaving out the faculty, the classified postings (grades 23 to 32 on the board), the student-worker jobs and one clinician. Titles include "Assistant Director of Purchasing", "Associate Bursar", "Data Analyst", "Admissions Counselor", "Program Manager" and "Director of Resource Planning". The Retention Specialist bulletin calls its role "an entry level administrative staff position", and bulletins give the pay as "Depends on Qualifications" with a grade rather than a figure. Fourteen are on the Main Campus in Bowling Green and one is at Firelands in Huron; two bulletins carry a "REMOTE EMPLOYMENT" value of "Flexible/Hybrid". The Flexible Work and Remote Work policy says "Employees must work on campus at least three days per week unless operational needs of the department/unit require otherwise", and that alternative arrangements are "a discretionary benefit to eligible employees".
What is the BGSU team like?
The Employee Assistance Program, run with AllOne Health, offers "unlimited phone consultation 24 hours a day, as well as legal, financial and identity theft recovery assistance, and child and elder care referral assistance" to full-time and part-time faculty and staff. The CAPTRUST financial advice program is "provided at no cost to employees", and the university offers "basic life insurance coverage, including an accidental death and dismemberment benefit, to all full-time faculty, administrative and classified staff at no cost". AllOne Health also runs live webinars on work-life topics that are available exclusively to BGSU employees.
Work-Life Balance
The Benefits page says "Administrative Staff Vacation accrual per calendar year = 22 days" and "Sick leave accrual per calendar year = 15 days". The Personal Leave Policy gives full-time administrative staff "16 hours per year" for their first three years, rising to "up to twenty-eight hours of personal leave per calendar year". The Holiday Calendar lists 11 paid holidays for 2026, two of them labelled floating holidays on fixed dates, and says "the institution will be closed from December 24, 2026 to January 1, 2027", with "The winter break days will be paid time off": four of them, 28 to 31 December. A new administrative staff member therefore has 22 vacation days, 11 holidays and four winter-break days, 37, before two personal days and 15 sick days. The Parental Leave policy gives full-time benefit-eligible employees with twelve months of service "up to thirty (30) consecutive business days of paid parental leave".
Perks and Benefits
BGSU offers "two health insurance options that are self-funded and administered by Medical Mutual of Ohio", a traditional PPO and a high-deductible plan, with prescriptions through CVS/Caremark. "The two state-mandated retirement programs are the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS) and the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS)", and the "Alternative Retirement Plan (ARP) option, which is available for full-time employees only"; "Both the employee and the University contribute to your retirement account." One cost of the public-university route: "Employees of Ohio public colleges and universities do not participate in the federal Social Security system, other than contributions to Medicare." The employee fee waiver "will waive one hundred percent of the in-state instructional and general fees only", with "unlimited hours per semester" for full-time employees, and a dependent child's waiver runs "through the end of the calendar year in which the dependent child turns twenty-four".
