About Bangor University
What is Bangor University?
Bangor University is a public university in Bangor, Gwynedd, on the North Wales coast. Its jobs site says "Bangor University employs staff in a wide variety of roles including Academic, Administration, Manual, and Professional roles" and describes "an ambitious university which is founded on its Welsh roots, research excellence and student centric focus", set "only a stone's throw from the Snowdonia national park". Its postings add that it was founded in 1884, has around 10,000 students and ten academic schools, and that its research in Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy "is ranked 15th overall in the UK", with 85% of its REF2021 research "judged to be world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*)". The university has a newly formed North Wales Medical School, and its Health Sciences staff teach at Bangor and at Wrexham.
Where will I work?
Roles are on campus. The lecturer postings on the board say "This role will be located on campus at Bangor", and the Diagnostic Radiography post says "This role will be located on campus at Wrexham with some travel to Bangor campus". Each also says "Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance". The Dynamic Working page is plain about the limits: "Dynamic working is not a right to work from home, but a framework to help staff work more flexibly where their job allows it", with fixed points that include "timetabled teaching, University meetings, service delivery, pastoral care, events and the need for availability of staff on campus". Postings are open to part-time and job-share requests, and two Health Sciences posts are advertised at 50% of full time. On 2026-10-20 the board listed ten postings: lecturers in pharmaceutical science, medical physiology and cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology in the North Wales Medical School, Health Sciences lecturers in diagnostic radiography, learning disability and midwifery, two 50% teaching-and-scholarship posts, a chef and a supply nursery nurse.
What is the Bangor team like?
Bangor says it is "driven by our Welsh heart and our international community", and one posting notes "The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable". Its Strategy 2030 aim, quoted on the Dynamic Working page, reads "We will create an outstanding, diverse and sustainable workplace which will promote the achievement of personal and institutional goals". The human resources pages list a Neurodiversity Network and an Armed Forces Covenant, and the benefits page lists an on-site Occupational Health Practitioner, an Employee Assistance Programme and a nursery, Tir na n-Og, "founded by Bangor University" on the Normal Site in Bangor. Staff start at the first point of their band, with "annual increments being paid each year".
Work-Life Balance
The benefits page says "We offer a generous leave entitlement of 27 days with additional bank holidays and seven additional University holidays", and the Annual Leave page gives the detail: "The entitlement is 27 working days with the choice of dates left to the individual", with "8 public holidays" and, for 2026/2027, "6 customary holidays" (four days at Christmas, the Thursday before Good Friday and the Tuesday after Easter Monday). The university closes on 23 December 2026 and reopens on 4 January 2027. That is 27 + 8 + 6 = 41 days in 2026/27, and 42 in 2025/26. Staff can also "purchase additional annual leave via a salary sacrifice arrangement". The page adds "We offer flexible working arrangements to suit your lifestyle" and "We recognise that people have commitments outside their job and we provide a highly desirable working environment that allows our employees to achieve the right work/life balance for them". The full-time week is 36.25 hours (a 7.25-hour day), as the leave calculator on the Annual Leave page shows. Family leave: "generous maternity leave and pay for all staff, regardless of length of service", paternity of "a maximum of two weeks off; at full pay", shared parental leave to "share 52 weeks' leave for the first year", and enhanced adoption leave and pay; the pay rates are not stated.
Perks and Benefits
Pensions: "two occupational pension schemes" for staff aged 18 to 60, plus the National Employment Savings Trust (NEST), with payment by salary sacrifice. A cycle to work scheme and discounts across retail, leisure and hospitality come through salary sacrifice. The Employee Assistance Programme (VIVUP) is open to staff members and their families, and the university has "an on site Occupational Health Practitioner". Childcare is more affordable through a salary exchange arrangement for the Tir na n-Og nursery, and Cambrian Credit Union offers staff a way of building savings or borrowing. The university provides "learning and development opportunities for academic and professional services staff", including a coaching and mentoring provision.
