About Aviva
What is Aviva?
Aviva plc is a British multinational insurance and financial-services company (LSE: AV.), with roots dating to 1696 (the Hand-in-Hand Fire Office) — making it one of the oldest insurance companies in the world. The modern Aviva was formed in 2000 from the merger of CGU plc and Norwich Union. Today Aviva serves around 19 million customers across the UK, Ireland and Canada in life insurance, general insurance, health insurance, pensions, savings and investments.
Where will I work?
Aviva's headquarters are at St Helen's in the City of London, with major UK offices in Norwich, Bristol, York, Sheffield, Eastleigh, Glasgow and Leeds, plus international offices in Dublin (Ireland) and Toronto (Canada). The Polish and Luxembourg offices handle group-shared services. Most office-based roles are hybrid by default.
What is the team like?
Around 30,000 employees globally across actuarial, claims, underwriting, customer service, finance, technology, data, marketing, HR, legal, sales and corporate functions. Aviva has a long-standing commitment to inclusion — explicit DEI targets, equal parental leave since 2017, and the firm has been published in the FT Diversity Leaders index.
Work-Life Balance — Equal Parental Leave (the headline benefit)
Aviva's flagship work-life perk is its equal parental leave, introduced in November 2017 and one of the first such policies in UK financial services. The policy entitles every new parent at Aviva — birth, adoptive, surrogacy, regardless of gender or sexual orientation — to 52 weeks of parental leave, with the first 26 weeks at full basic pay. If both partners work at Aviva, each is entitled to the full 26 weeks at full pay (no requirement to share). The policy has been independently verified in Aviva's own 2021 + 2022 takeup reports as showing new dads at Aviva take an average of over 5 months of parental leave — making it one of the most-used equal-leave schemes in the UK.
