About Australian Institute of Marine Science

What is the Australian Institute of Marine Science?

AIMS is Australia's national marine research agency — a Commonwealth statutory authority founded in 1972 that studies tropical marine ecosystems, above all the Great Barrier Reef. Its work spans coral reef monitoring, water quality, aquaculture and the SeaSim National Sea Simulator, one of the world's most advanced marine research aquarium facilities.

Where will I work?

Primarily at Cape Ferguson near Townsville, Queensland, with facilities in Darwin and Perth. A commuter car fleet runs to the site.

What is the AIMS team like?

Around 740 people: marine biologists, oceanographers, data scientists, software developers, technicians and the professional staff who support them.

Work-Life Balance

AIMS advertises the same headline on role after role — "9-day fortnight, enjoy a long weekend each fortnight" — from executive assistants and research assistants to software developers and facility directors. It is an agency-wide arrangement, not a perk for one team.

Perks and Benefits

  • 9-day fortnight — a long weekend every second week
  • Generous and supportive leave entitlements
  • Commuter car fleet to the Cape Ferguson site
  • Relocation assistance on some roles
  • World-class marine research facilities
