We Are Seeking

Team Gilbert has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated professional to fill the position of Engineering Plans Examiner Senior - Planning. With every job we fill, our focus is on providing best-in-class service to our citizens while offering opportunities for professional growth in a rewarding, innovative work environment.

The Engineering Plans Examiner Senior - Planning reports to the Principle Planner. The primary functions of this position include:

  • Review complex construction drawing submittals — residential, commercial, industrial, public facility, and multi-family — for compliance with the Land Development Code, Design Review/Planning Commission, and Town Council approvals
  • Review commercial building permits for architecture, site design, landscaping and irrigation. Review includes review of plan compliance with the Land Development Code and professional practice standards, and related easements.
  • Field inspections of site, building exterior, and landscape improvements.
  • Review final plats, minor land divisions, and maps of dedication for zoning stipulations, legal descriptions, and design review requirements
  • Communicate Land Development code requirements, zoning ordinances, conditions of approval, and other applicable codes and regulations to staff and stakeholders.
  • Serve as a technical resource to lower-level plans examiners — providing guidance on complex, politically sensitive, or urgent projects and assisting with difficult cases
  • For a full list of duties, please review the job description.

This is an FLSA Non-Exempt, at-will position with the Town of Gilbert.

Tentative Recruitment Timeline:

About You

You're a seasoned plan reviewer who can dig into a complex, politically sensitive project and know exactly what to look for. You bring several years of hands-on experience reviewing engineering and construction documents for compliance with zoning guidelines and requirements — and you're just as comfortable interpreting a legal description as you are explaining a code requirement to a frustrated developer. You're the person newer examiners turn to when a case gets complicated, and you take pride in mentoring them through it. You communicate clearly and confidently with builders, contractors, and the public, bringing a steady, detail-oriented approach to every plan that crosses your desk.

At Team Gilbert, we hire innovative, forward-thinking problem-solvers who love what they do! In addition to possessing the ability to live out our core and functional values daily, candidates must possess the following requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree. Emphasis in planning, architectural engineering, construction plans examination, or a closely related field is desirable.
  • 4–5 years of experience with construction plan review and working with complex residential and non-residential projects, reports, legal descriptions, and code implementation.
  • Customer service experience responding to questions, concerns, and processes from the public
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this classification

This position requires a pre-employment background check.

This position has been designated as a Light work position that will spend a portion of their workday in an office environment and in the field conducting inspections.

The physical demands and working conditions information above is meant to provide a general idea of the conditions for this role. Gilbert is committed to being an inclusive employer of candidates with a wide range of abilities, and looks for opportunities to accommodate different abilities within reason.
