About The Good Food Institute

What is the Good Food Institute?

The Good Food Institute (GFI) describes its mission this way: "We unlock the knowledge and resources needed to transform how meat is made—satisfying rising food demand in ways that accelerate climate progress, protect animals and ecosystems, and strengthen public health." Its vision is "a thriving world, fed sustainably." Its About page says it works "to make alternative proteins—plant-based, fermentation-derived, and cultivated from animal cells—as delicious and affordable as conventional meat", and that it is "not a trade association or member-based organization". It works through "three programmatic priorities": a strong scientific ecosystem, public support for alternative proteins through policy, and industry engagement. It is "an international network of organizations powered by philanthropy", with donors from "more than 60 countries", and its benefits summary describes the US team as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Where will I work?

Its careers page says "GFI is a strongly connected, mostly remote organization with our Policy and Government Relations team working from an office on Connecticut Ave. in Washington, D.C." Its benefits summary adds "Most of GFI’s team works remotely in the U.S. (with the exception of our D.C. Policy and Government Relations office)", and says it supports remote work "by providing funding for co-working (through a Lifestyle Spending Account) and local get-togethers, a home office setup stipend, and remote team connection events including team breaks, games, meditation, and more." Staff stay connected through "online meetings, virtual and in-person social get-togethers, and coworking", and the team meets at an annual all-staff retreat.

What is the GFI team like?

Its careers page says "We’re building a better world and we’re also building a better nonprofit" and that "Our team describes itself as supportive, kind, collaborative, and fun!" It runs a Culture Club with "monthly team connection events" and affinity groups for caregivers and for mental health and well-being, and asks its team for feedback each year through an engagement survey, then shares "the results and an improvement plan". It uses "an assessment-based hiring process and standardized interviews" and "third-party anonymizing software" on applications, and says "we publish narrow salary ranges in each of our job postings".

Work-Life Balance

Its time-off package for full-time staff is "15 vacation days (increasing from there with seniority), 5 personal days, 10 sick days, 13 paid holidays (3 of which are floating to ensure inclusivity of all religious holidays), a day off for your birthday, bereavement leave, time off for jury duty, and a 10-day sabbatical after 5 years of service and again at 10 years of service." It adds "an inclusive paid family and medical leave policy" that "provides 12 work-weeks of paid, job-protected leave". Its benefits summary lists three team-wide PAWS days a year for "collective rest and recharge" and says it offers "flexible work schedules".
