About Queen Mary University of London
What is Queen Mary University of London?
Its Facts and figures page describes "a leading research-intensive university with a difference" and says "Our history dates back to 1785, with the founding of The London Hospital Medical College, England’s first official medical school". It is "a Russell Group university, operating across five campuses in London and at sites across Europe and Asia", with over 32,000 students on degree programmes and over 5,700 members of staff. Its main campus is at Mile End Road in east London, and its staff pages also name Charterhouse Square and Whitechapel as places to work.
Its vacancies board lists academic and research posts alongside professional services roles. The postings read on 2026-10-10 include a Digital Learning Officer in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and an Enquiry Assistant in Professional Services, both full time at 35 hours a week, while the board also carries hospitality and clinical posts that work on site.
Where will I work?
Its Hybrid Working Policy says "Hybrid is a flexible approach to working that encourages you to work in a location appropriate to the task that you are undertaking, be that in the office, at home, or another location". It is clear about the limits: "Queen Mary will rarely support fully remote working", and "The proportion of home and on-campus working will depend on the nature of your role and what is agreed locally within your team/department". It adds that "it is not expected that anyone will work from home all of the time", and that roles such as laboratory work, security and cleaning are location specific. The postings read carry no day count, so the pattern is for the team to agree.
What is the Queen Mary team like?
Its benefits page says "At Queen Mary, we provide a comprehensive range of staff benefits to support wellbeing, personal and professional development and more". Organisational and Professional Development (for all staff) and the Queen Mary Academy (for academic staff) offer "e-learning, professional development, coaching, mentoring", and staff get "free access to LinkedIn Learning". Its academic promotion process "is designed to recognise and enable the development of our Lecturers, Senior Lecturers and Readers", launched each November. The staff networks include "a LGBTQ+ Staff Network (QMOut)" alongside parents and carers, disability, gender equality, race equality and menopause networks, and "There are five recognised trade unions at Queen Mary".
Work-Life Balance
Its benefits page lists "The full time annual leave entitlement is 30 working days" plus bank holidays, and says "staff are entitled to paid holidays on four other days when the university closes". Its closure calendar for 2026 lists the bank holidays and the Christmas and New Year closure days (24, 29, 30 and 31 December), so a full-time employee in England has 30 days, eight bank holidays and four closure days, 42 days in all. The leave year runs from 1 August to 31 July, and "Up to 5 days of annual leave may be authorised for carry over". Its family friendly policies cover "maternity, paternity, adoption, fertility and shared parental leave above the statutory minimum arrangements". The same policy page separates where you work from when you work, and says "flexible working can mean working part-time, working compressed hours (e.g. a 9 day fortnight) or working term-time only".
