About Prism

What is Prism?

Prism is an independent, nonprofit news outlet led by journalists of color reporting on systems of power from the perspective of communities most directly affected by injustice. The newsroom's self-stated mission, verbatim from /about, is to "investigate systems of power with communities most impacted by injustice at the center of our reporting. We connect lived experience to structural inequality, ground our work in historical and political context, and produce clear, accurate journalism that strengthens movements and builds media literacy for collective liberation."

Founded in 2019 "because we knew that the status quo media landscape wasn't reflecting enough of the truth," Prism publishes original investigative and explanatory reporting across five focus areas — State Power; Bodies, Gender & Health; Borders & Empire; Land, Labor & Extraction; and Culture, Media & Education — and runs additional initiatives including the Reflective Journalism Project and the Movement Media Alliance.

Where will I work?

Prism is a fully remote organisation. The /about/jobs/ page states verbatim: "While we are headquartered in California, we are a fully-remote team — with staff member locations ranging from the Bay Area, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and the US South." When openings are posted, they are typically open to candidates anywhere in the US.

What is the Prism team like?

The Staff & Board page lists a 13-person editorial staff plus a 5-person board. Lara Witt is Editor-in-Chief, an "award-winning writer, journalist, editor, and the co-founder of the Movement Media Alliance and Media Against Apartheid & Displacement." Caitlin Gaffin is Publisher and founding co-director of Holler Health Justice, "a reproductive health nonprofit and abortion fund in Appalachia."

Senior editorial leadership includes Carolyn Copeland (Managing Editor, Bay Area-based, writing has appeared in The Washington Post and SF Chronicle), Sahar Fatima (News Editor, formerly criminal-justice editor at The Boston Globe), Tina Vásquez (Features Editor, Alicia Patterson Foundation fellow), and Rashmee Kumar (Senior Copy Editor, formerly at The Intercept and Guardian US). Reporting team includes Alexandra Martinez (Senior News Reporter) and ray levy uyeda (Senior Features Reporter, Bay Area).

Operations leadership includes Saba Keramati (Operations Director), Rikki Li (Program Director, M.S. in Journalism from Northwestern) and Shabnam Banerjee-McFarland (Audience Director). Board Chair Ashton Lattimore is a former Editor-in-Chief of Prism.

Work-Life Balance

Prism's live jobs page does not currently publish a specific working-hours, four-day-week or formal time-off policy, and there are no live openings ("There are no current job openings at Prism"). Earlier 4dayweek.io copy referenced a 32-hour, four-day workweek (Monday–Thursday) for Prism's staff, but this can't be re-verified against the live or archived prismreports.org pages, so candidates should confirm the latest working-hours arrangement directly with Prism at application stage when a role is posted.

Perks and Benefits

The live /about/jobs/ page is brief and does not publish a benefits list while no roles are open. The verifiable working-style facts from /about/jobs/ are:

  • Fully remote, US-based hiring — "we are a fully-remote team — with staff member locations ranging from the Bay Area, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and the US South"
  • Mission alignment as central value — the page invites "BIPOC, women, the LGBTQ+ community, and other invisibilized groups" to apply
  • Equal Opportunity Employer — "Prism is committed to providing equal employment opportunity for all employees and applicants regardless of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, age, national origin, ancestry, religion, marital status, pregnancy, genetic information, disability, whistleblower status, or any other personal characteristics protected by state or federal law"
