About Open Ownership
Who We Are
Open Ownership (OO) is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing beneficial ownership transparency (BOT)—revealing the true owners behind companies and legal entities. We believe that access to high-quality ownership data strengthens economies, reduces corruption, combats illicit financial flows, and fosters greater trust in governance and business practices worldwide.
Since our inception in 2017, we have established ourselves as the leading global voice on beneficial ownership transparency. We have partnered with nearly 40 countries across six continents, helping governments implement beneficial ownership reforms that comply with international standards, including the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) recommendations, and promote meaningful transparency.
What We Do
Open Ownership provides comprehensive technical assistance and capacity-building support to governments worldwide to help them design and implement effective beneficial ownership reforms. Our work spans the entire reform lifecycle—from policy design and legal frameworks to technical implementation and data use.
We have developed the Beneficial Ownership Data Standard (BODS), the world's leading open data standard for beneficial ownership information. BODS enables the publication of structured, interoperable, and high-quality ownership data that can be used effectively by governments, civil society, journalists, and businesses.
In addition to guiding legal and technical frameworks, we build practical tools like the Global Open Ownership Register, which enables the publication and use of structured ownership data at scale. Our resources and guidance help countries move beyond compliance to create systems that deliver real-world impact.
Our work empowers governments to improve regulatory effectiveness, helps civil society hold power to account, and enables businesses to conduct better due diligence—all contributing to reduced corruption risks, improved investment climates, and better governance outcomes globally.
Working at Open Ownership
We are a fully remote organization with a globally distributed team of dedicated experts spanning policy, technology, research, and communications. Our team brings together diverse perspectives and deep expertise in transparency, anti-corruption, data standards, and public policy reform.
We place a strong emphasis on flexibility and work-life balance, offering a four-day workweek to foster well-being, creativity, and sustained productivity. We recognize that our team does their best work when they have time to recharge and maintain healthy lives outside of work.
Our collaborative culture values diversity, inclusivity, open communication, and a shared commitment to making a positive impact on governance and transparency worldwide. We encourage independent thinking, support professional development, and create space for team members to grow their expertise while contributing to meaningful change.
