About International Coalition of Sites of Conscience

Who we are

The International Coalition of Sites of Conscience is, in its own words, "the only worldwide network of Sites of Conscience. With over 300 members in 65 countries." Founded in 1999 at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in New York, the Coalition supports historic sites, place-based museums, and memorial initiatives — from former Gulag museums to slave houses to concentration camps — that turn memory into action on contemporary human rights.

What we do

The Coalition builds the capacity of member institutions through grants, networking, training, transitional-justice mechanisms, and advocacy. Its mission is to "turn memory into action": connecting communities to difficult histories so that visitors can draw the lines between past struggle and present injustice. Members span long-standing democracies, post-conflict regions, and countries actively reckoning with legacies of violence, but they are all united by a shared commitment to remembering and to dialogue.

Where will I work?

The Coalition's headquarters is at 55 Exchange Place, Suite 404, lower Manhattan, New York, NY 10005, but employees are based around the world. From the careers page: "With employees in six countries on four continents, we have a flexible and holistic approach to 'the office.'" Most staff work virtually from anywhere; comfortable office space is available at the New York HQ for those who prefer it. A subsidiary regional entity, ICSC-Europe, operates as part of the same Coalition.

What is the Sites of Conscience team like?

The Coalition is led by Executive Director Ereshnee Naidu, supported by Program Directors Sarah Case and Silvia Fernández, Senior Program Manager Justine Di Mayo, Senior Director of Operations Teresa Vazquez, and other programme staff. The team brings multilingual capabilities and cross-cultural fluency from consulting, museum education, human-rights advocacy, media, administration, and international development.

The Coalition shifted to a 4-day workweek in January 2021. Then-Executive Director Elizabeth Silkes explained: "Burnout is real and we want to do all we can to avoid it. By making 3-day weekends the norm, we will have more time to take care of personal matters, including self-care, outside of work hours."
