About Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team

Who We Are

The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is an international team dedicated to humanitarian action and community development through open mapping. We bring together a global community of volunteers, organizations, and mapping professionals committed to creating and sharing open map data.

We work together to provide map data which revolutionizes disaster management, reduces risks, and contributes to achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Our maps help humanitarian organizations reach communities in crisis, support development projects in underserved areas, and empower local communities with the data they need to improve their own lives.

In 2020, the work of the HOT community was recognized by TED's Audacious Project, a collaborative philanthropic initiative that serves as a springboard for social impact on a grand scale, leading to an exciting new phase of growth. This recognition has enabled us to expand our impact and reach even more communities around the world.

What We Do

HOT's work is global in scale and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our Monitoring and Evaluation framework is constantly evolving to ensure tangible and measurable impact across all our initiatives.

Our work includes:

  • Reaching those in need through maps - We create detailed, accessible maps that help humanitarian organizations deliver aid more effectively to communities affected by disasters and crises
  • Mapping areas vulnerable to disaster - We proactively map high-risk regions to improve preparedness and enable faster, more effective disaster response
  • Expanding knowledge across partners and communities - We provide training and capacity building to local communities and partner organizations, ensuring sustainable mapping skills and data use
  • Developing innovative new technology - We create and maintain open-source tools and platforms to serve the humanitarian and development communities, making mapping more accessible and efficient
  • Working to support and build OpenStreetMap - We contribute to and strengthen the OpenStreetMap platform, ensuring it remains a free, open, and reliable resource for everyone
