About Giffords
What is Giffords?
Giffords is a nonprofit organization "dedicated to saving lives from gun violence", founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. It traces its roots to two shootings. In 1993, a mass shooting at a San Francisco law firm led lawyers to create what became the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. In 2011, Gabby Giffords was shot while meeting constituents in Tucson, and after the Sandy Hook shooting she and her husband, Captain Mark Kelly, formed Americans for Responsible Solutions. In 2016 the two joined forces, pairing "the unmatched legal acumen of the country's foremost experts on gun laws with the political know-how of a dedicated issue advocacy group". Today its work spans legislation, litigation, elections, violence intervention and culture change, through Giffords, Giffords Law Center and Giffords PAC, and it pushes for evidence-based solutions such as universal background checks, Extreme Risk Protection Orders and community violence intervention programs.
Where will I work?
Giffords is based in Washington, DC, and its current staff role is "a full-time hybrid remote/in-person position based in our Washington, DC office". Some roles staff occasional evening or weekend events and travel now and then. Its board also carries the Courage Fellowship, a programme of trainings for activists aged 18 to 24, which is not a job and is not listed here.
What is the Giffords team like?
Giffords describes itself as "on the lookout for smart and passionate people to join our growing team" and as an equal opportunity employer "committed to assembling a diverse staff". It works by building "wide, sometimes unlikely coalitions", from frontline violence interrupters to moderate Republicans and gun owners, and it says everything it does honors the victims and survivors of the two shootings that led to its founding. Since 2018 its staff have also trained young activists through the Courage Fellowship, and it calls itself "a courageous force for change", built on "a foundation of legal expertise and bold leadership".
Work-Life Balance
The careers page offers "ten annual paid federal holidays and five weeks of paid time off, annually", which is 35 days off a year, and its postings add a "paid week closure at the end of the calendar year". The hybrid setup splits the week between home and the DC office.
