About Cybera
What is Cybera?
Cybera is "Alberta's research and education network organization, focused on creating a connected, secure, and equitable digital future for the province." As a not-for-profit, its core role is "to oversee the development and operations of Alberta's cyberinfrastructure – the advanced system of networks and computers that keep government, educators, not-for-profits, and entrepreneurs at the forefront of technological change." It operates Alberta's research and education network and supports better internet services for the public sector, builds shared resources for schools and colleges (its ShareIT service runs joint IT procurement), provides free cloud computing to Alberta innovators, and advocates for "more accessible AND more affordable internet for all Canadians". It has also set up a regional Security Operations Centre to monitor, detect and respond to cyber threats aimed at Alberta's post-secondary institutions. With 13 provincial and territorial partners, Cybera forms Canada's National Research and Education Network.
Where will I work?
Cybera's head office is in the Energy Resources Research Building in northwest Calgary, and its open roles are based there. Work is hybrid: the postings offer "A hybrid working environment, with flexible hours". In September 2026 Cybera was hiring Linux systems administrators, an internal cybersecurity lead, a human resources manager and an executive operations and board lead.
What is the Cybera team like?
Cybera describes itself as "a company of 40+ people (and growing!)". President and CEO Barb Carra leads a four-person executive team, and the staff run network and Linux operations, security, the SOC, member relations, procurement, communications, policy and finance. Its values are Community, Thought leadership and Trust, and it says that "Our not-for-profit status means we are solutions oriented, not profit oriented." It looks for people who are smart, funny, independent thinkers, advocates for technology and comfortable with iterative work, and says "Cyberans work hard, but we have a lot of fun doing it!" Staff learn "through funded professional development and training, but also through staff mentorship programs", and help shape "the vision of what Cybera can become".
Work-Life Balance
Cybera works "35-hour work weeks, except in July and August, when we work 32-hour work weeks and have every Friday off." It offers "Flexible work times", and vacation accrues from your first day ("3 weeks is our standard base"). On top of that come 10 days a year "to use for sick time or mental health days", the office closure between Christmas and New Year, three extra non-statutory holidays (Heritage Day, Boxing Day and Truth & Reconciliation Day), your birthday, a moving day and a paid day to volunteer. After 10 years you get a month off.
