About CareMessage

What is CareMessage?

CareMessage is the technology non-profit building the largest patient engagement platform for low-income populations in the United States. Founded to advance health equity, CareMessage adapts best practices from traditional SaaS and product-led organizations to deliver healthcare transformation for Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and free clinics — the safety-net organizations serving America's most underserved patients.

The flagship product is Wellness Copilot, an engagement platform that helps clinics communicate with patients via text and other channels at scale. "We've adapted best practices from traditional SaaS and product-led organizations, to create both products and services that deliver healthcare transformation. However, unlike a number of scaled technology organizations, we ingrained diversity, equity and inclusion into every aspect of our work from the start."

Where will I work?

CareMessage has been a fully remote team since 2019. Team members work from Brazil, India, and the United States"wherever they like — their home, favorite coffee shop, or on the beach — during the hours that best suit their lifestyles." The 2024 company offsite was held in Atlanta, Georgia, including visits to a free-clinic customer (Our House).

What is the CareMessage team like?

CareMessage is a small, mission-driven team anchored in four values that spell CARE: Collaboration (growth mindset, treating failures as learning), Authenticity (transparency, honesty, integrity in all stakeholder interactions), Results (data-driven measurement, no vanity metrics), and Empathy ("respect and cultural humility towards our peers, target populations, customers, and partners").

A defining feature: equal pay for equal work is operationally enforced — "all team members performing the same role at the same level are paid the same regardless of where they are in the world – no need to negotiate" — with compensation benchmarked to competitive California pay. The team also makes time and budget investments in Employee Resource Groups and incorporates volunteerism in onboarding.

Work-Life Balance

CareMessage's time-off policy is unusually generous for a nonprofit: 15 vacation days day-one, scaling to 20 after 24 months, plus 18 paid holidays including 5-day mid-year and 5-day end-of-year breaks, plus 9 wellness days for self-care or anything that comes up in life. After 4 years of service, team members earn a 1-month paid sabbatical (20 working days) — and another sabbatical every 4 years thereafter.

The schedule includes half-day Fridays, with the studio's framing: "We offer work flexibility, and focus on measuring outcomes over activities."
