About Bicycle Transit Systems
What is Bicycle Transit Systems?
Bicycle Transit Systems (BTS) is a woman-owned bike share operator that runs the largest dock-based bike share systems in the United States. Per the company's jobs page: "Bike Transit was founded in 2014 by Alison Cohen, a global leader in the bike share industry who deeply understands that bike share is a multi-disciplinary undertaking. Alison led the launch of the earliest and the largest systems in the United States, including Washington DC, Boston and New York."
The core mission, from the values page: "Strengthen communities and protect our planet through the development and implementation of bike share." BTS pioneered transit integration for bike share in Los Angeles and introduced the first reduced-fare access pass in Philadelphia. In September 2024 the company acquired BCycle from Trek (Streets Blog USA, Mass Transit, Bicycle Retailer), instantly becoming the only vertically integrated docked bike share company in North America — operating its own software, hardware, and product development under one roof.
Where will I work?
Post-BCycle acquisition, BTS operates programs in 13+ U.S. cities: Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Las Vegas (its original three), plus 10 BCycle programs including San Antonio TX, Nashville TN, Madison WI, and Santa Barbara CA. The company also runs a nation-wide customer service call center. Roles are typically tied to a specific program city, with some hybrid and remote options.
What is the Bicycle Transit Systems team like?
The team grew rapidly to 200+ employees following the BCycle acquisition, organised around three explicit values from the mission page: DEIJ-driven ("we honor and celebrate our differences. We work collectively to support staff and riders. We advance equity and justice for communities"), Innovative ("creative and practical solutions to the complex challenges posed by urban transportation and micromobility"), and Responsible ("financial, social, and environmental sustainability in our decision-making"). The team is described as "motivated, team-oriented and mission-driven people" with "an incredible internal culture".
Work-Life Balance
BTS publishes a clear vacation baseline: 3 weeks PTO and 1 week sick time off per year, plus up to 8 weeks of 100% paid parental leave. Pay framing is grounded in fairness — the company centres equity in employment alongside community-facing equity work.
