About Barefoot Architects
What is Barefoot Architects?
Barefoot Architects is an ecological architecture studio established in 2014, with offices in Bristol and Totnes, Devon. The practice specialises in ecological and regenerative design — creating homes, community buildings, and retrofit projects that work in harmony with the natural environment.
The studio focuses on sustainable and low-energy design, community-led housing projects, and sensitive retrofits of existing buildings. Barefoot Architects has achieved 4 Day Week Foundation Gold accreditation, and operates an 80/80 model where all staff have the option to work a 4-day week at pro rata salary. Approximately half the team currently takes advantage of this arrangement.
Where will I work?
Barefoot Architects has two studio locations. The primary office is at Unit 5.2, Paintworks, Bristol, BS4 3EH — a creative hub in south Bristol. The second studio is in Totnes, Devon, a town known for its progressive environmental and community values. The working model is office-first, with the team based in one of the two studios.
Bristol is a vibrant city with a strong creative and environmental culture, while Totnes offers a smaller community with deep roots in sustainability and alternative living — both locations reflect the studio's ecological ethos.
What is the team like?
With approximately 8 employees, Barefoot Architects is a small, friendly team united by a genuine passion for ecological design and sustainable building. The studio has a warm, community-oriented culture that extends beyond the office — team members cook lunch for each other, enjoy monthly pizza nights, and take quarterly away days together.
The team comprises architects, designers, and support staff who are drawn to the practice because of its commitment to meaningful, environmentally responsible work. The collaborative culture means everyone has input into design decisions and feels ownership of the projects they work on.
Work-Life Balance
Barefoot Architects operates an 80/80 model — all staff have the option to work a 4-day week (32 hours) at pro rata (80%) salary. Approximately 50% of the team currently choose this arrangement. The company has achieved 4 Day Week Foundation Gold accreditation in recognition of this policy.
The pro rata model gives employees genuine choice over their work-life balance. Combined with 24 days of annual holiday, the option for a 4-day week means staff can enjoy extended weekends throughout the year without the financial pressure that sometimes accompanies reduced hours arrangements at other firms.
