About Amazon

Who We Are

Amazon is guided by four principles:

  • Customer obsession rather than competitor focus
  • Passion for invention
  • Commitment to operational excellence
  • Long-term thinking

We are driven by the excitement of building technologies, inventing products, and providing services that change lives. We embrace new ways of doing things, make decisions quickly, and are not afraid to fail. We have the scope and capabilities of a large company, and the spirit and heart of a small one.

Together, Amazonians research and develop new technologies from Amazon Web Services to Alexa on behalf of our customers: shoppers, sellers, content creators, and developers around the world.

Our mission is to be Earth's most customer-centric company. Our actions, goals, projects, programs, and inventions begin and end with the customer top of mind.

Our Reduced-Time Tech Initiative

We are piloting "Reduced-Time Tech Teams" in various areas of the company. These teams work 30 hours per week (Monday through Thursday is a common schedule) and receive the same benefits as full-time employees, with compensation proportionate to working 3/4 time.

The program aims to provide real, impactful work with the same promotion and growth opportunities as full-time teams. This means reduced-time employees are evaluated for advancement using the same criteria and have access to the same career development resources.

This initiative was created with Amazon's diverse workforce in mind and the realization that the traditional full-time schedule may not be a "one size fits all" model. Although this is relatively new for technical job families, the concept of reduced-time employment is not new to Amazon—there are non-tech individuals who currently work a reduced 30 hour per week schedule. What is novel for Amazon is the creation of teams that are entirely comprised of reduced-time employees, including managers. This structure ensures that team dynamics, meeting schedules, and project timelines are designed around the reduced-time model from the ground up.
