What is Alliance magazine?

Alliance is the only philanthropy magazine with a global focus, positioning itself as "the critical friend of philanthropy worldwide." The magazine has been published by Alliance Publishing Trust (APT) since 1 January 2007 (previously published by Allavida) — a UK-registered charity (Charity Number: 1116744, Company Number: 5935154).

Alliance covers nonprofits, foundations, climate philanthropy, community philanthropy, digital and technology in philanthropy, diversity, funding practice, gender philanthropy, philanthropy infrastructure, philanthropy research, social investment, and international development. Coverage spans Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North Africa, and globally — making it the field's primary trusted source for thorough and balanced perspectives.

Alliance is headquartered at 1st Floor, 15 Prescott Place, London, SW4 6BS (Tel +44 207 062 8920). The organisation operates a hybrid model with named in-office days for collaboration plus flexibility on remaining days.

What is the Alliance team like?

Alliance is led by Executive Director David Drewery, supported by an Editorial Advisory Council, the APT board, and Alliance Regional Representatives spanning the magazine's global coverage areas. The team produces the quarterly magazine, an Alliance Extra (Premium) tier, columns (Critical Friend, Philanthropy Wired), in-person Alliance events, and global conference coverage.

Work-Life Balance

Alliance is an accredited four-day-week employer, with the policy made permanent in January 2025 after a successful six-month trial in 2024. From the executive director's primary post:

  • "From January to June 2024, we reduced full time hours for full time staff from 35 to 32 hours per week – an 8.5 percent reduction."
  • "Full-time staff worked four eight hour days, totalling 32 hours."
  • "We allowed individual staff members to choose their day off, excluding in-office days."
  • "The core principle of the trial is for employees to complete 100 per cent of their work in 80 per cent of their hours for 100 per cent of their pay."

Trial outcomes (verbatim):

  • 100% of staff reported an improved work-life balance
  • No staff member reported increased work stress
  • 100% of staff felt the trial had a positive impact on their physical and mental health
  • Alliance exceeded both its projected budget and stretch target, securing 92% of its required annual income
  • All editorial outputs were delivered on schedule
  • 92% of staff stated it would make them more likely to apply for a job at Alliance if they didn't already work there
