What is Monadical?
Monadical is a software consultancy that says it turns "emerging technology into working systems": R&D for teams exploring what comes next, from prototypes and experimental software to production-ready systems. It has grown from two founders in 2016 to a full team, and its job postings describe "3-12+ month projects across multiple sectors". The team says its projects have been praised by the NYTimes, Forbes, HackerNews and ProductHunt, and that its apps have accumulated more than 2 million downloads, with millions of web users across more than 120 countries. Its featured case study is Recidiviz, which, after deploying data aggregation tools across multiple states, was ready to use AI in its next generation of tools for reducing incarceration rates.
Where will I work?
Remotely. Monadical is "a fully remote software consultancy", and its team works from Montréal, Vancouver, Medellín and Cali. Its remote positions "are only open to candidates in the location stated in the job title", so a role marked Canada means living in Canada or being legally able to work there. The current senior full-stack posting asks for availability during Eastern working hours (10am to 5pm, flexible), and lists living in or near Montréal as a nice-to-have. Discussions about company decisions are meant to happen in openly accessible Zulip channels rather than in private, and a check-ins stream lets everyone see who is working on what.
What is the Monadical team like?
"We pride ourselves on being generalists who love to learn." Monadical calls itself "a relatively flat organization" that works across many toolsets and stacks depending on each project, does "a lot of R&D", and moves quickly with short iteration cycles. It operates primarily in English, and clients can also contact it in French or Spanish. Co-founders Max McCrea and Nick Sweeting are both full-stack engineers, and COO Ana González heads operations and hiring. The company's principles handbook, first published in 2017, is "a collaborative effort that any employee can edit through a pull request"; it asks people to say what they mean, give feedback before frustration builds, review all code before it is checked in and reflect together in regular retrospectives. Hiring starts with an untimed ten-minute coding test, followed by a 45-minute non-coding conversation with "no whiteboarding or quizzing theory", a short take-home project (senior applicants may use their own open-source project instead) and two 60-minute pairing interviews.
Work-Life Balance
The careers page offers "six weeks paid vacation, flexible hours, and a culture that respects time off", and the current posting lists "30+ days off per year". The principles handbook gives everyone "the freedom to choose their own working schedule", noting that starting work at 11am is fine because the team has "plenty of night owls". It also says "Our lives are short, and we value free time and balance", and recommends an explicit separation between working and free hours.
