About Juno College
What is Juno College?
Juno College of Technology, formerly HackerYou, is a Toronto coding school. Its own careers page says "Founded by Heather Payne in 2012, Juno College of Technology offers best-in-class experiences for those looking to launch and grow their careers", and that it serves "over 1,000 students a year" with an alumni community "over 10,000 people strong". Its programs are live online bootcamps in web development (full-time and part-time), data analytics and UX design, and its postings state the mission plainly: "to be the school of choice for people underrepresented in the industry looking to launch and grow careers in tech".
Where will I work?
The team is remote. The general application says "Our programs are Live Online and our team is working remotely, with most based out of Toronto and the GTA", and its open positions are listed as "Toronto, ON / Remote". Instructors teach live online classes, so part-time instructor roles run in the evening or at weekends depending on the course.
What is the Juno College team like?
The general application describes "a growing team of over 35", and the careers page lists four values: "We're experimental", "We deliver results", "We're flexible" and "We put the student experience first". It calls itself "a people-powered college that thrives on collaboration and community". As "a private career college", it requires its instructors to have "at least 2 years of practical, professional experience as developers", and the postings promise "Clear growth paths". Its 2021 announcement of the shorter week also set a goal to move the company toward 100% employee ownership.
Work-Life Balance
Juno works a four-day week. The careers page says "all team members have 4-day work weeks, 3 weeks of paid vacation, and 7 personal emergency days a year", plus "a company-wide holiday closure from December 24th to the New Year", and the full-time instructor posting repeats "4-day work weeks" in its benefits. The schedule was announced in October 2021: "we will begin a transition to a four-day work week in 2022 with no change in pay", so that staff could "take Fridays off", with "no Instructor-led classes on Fridays for any Juno programs". None of the pages states the weekly hours, and the postings are undated, so check the current schedule with the college when you apply.
Perks and Benefits
The careers page lists a "comprehensive benefits package" with a Health Care Spending Account, an Employee & Family Assistance Program, a Personalized Prescription Plan, Health and Travel benefits and Mental Health benefits. Juno is "a certified Living Wage Employer", the full-time Web Development Instructor posting shows a salary of "$61,440 - $65,000/year", and its compensation philosophy is "we present our best offer to our candidates", with no negotiation. Parents get a "progressive pregnancy & parental leave policy", with all employees topped up "to 75% for three months". For learning, "Juno team members can join our courses for free" and there is "a Professional Development Fund of $500 per person".
