About Five-D
What is Five-D?
Five-D — registered as FIVE-D LIMITED — is a multi-discipline engineering consultancy in Taranaki, New Zealand. Its careers page introduces the firm as "a 100% employee-owned, New Zealand-owned engineering firm based in the heart of New Plymouth", and its stated purpose is "solving complex engineering challenges with clarity, agility, and precision". The practice covers the full project lifecycle across nine service lines: project development, project management, financial and commercial services, mechanical engineering, pipeline engineering, electrical and instrumentation, process engineering, design drafting, and structural engineering. Day-to-day work runs from concept design, feasibility studies and CAPEX/OPEX cost estimating through to HAZOP and LOPA studies, finite element analysis, asset integrity assessment and commissioning support. Clients sit in energy, infrastructure, renewables, mining, geothermal, petrochemical and chemical processing, terminals and ports, manufacturing, and food and beverage. Five-D says its core work is in the energy sector and that it is "actively supporting Aotearoa's transition to a low-carbon future through renewables and infrastructure development".
Where will I work?
From one of two offices. The head office is at Level One, 42 Egmont Street, New Plymouth, in Taranaki; there is a second office at 12 Ashwood Avenue, Tauhara, Taupo. The firm sells the location as part of the offer — the New Plymouth office is "right in the CBD, just minutes from the coastal walkway and with views of both the sea and maunga" — and argues that "Taranaki offers a unique mix of lifestyle and professional opportunity, and we believe you shouldn't have to trade one for the other". No remote or hybrid working policy is published.
What is the Five-D team like?
Small, senior and technically deep. The published team pairs mechanical, process, pipeline and project specialists with commercial people: a managing director, directors of partnerships and performance, project delivery, asset integrity and engineering, plus a process and process safety engineering manager, a mechanical team lead and a lead pipeline engineer. Five-D describes itself as "a high-performing team with a people-first approach, strong technical capability, and a focus on doing good work with good people", and says it is "after smart, motivated engineers who enjoy solving problems and working in a place where they can make a difference". Five values guide the work — Focus on People, Dynamic Delivery, Create Value, Environmental Impact and Innovative Solutions — the first of which reads: "We prioritise the wellbeing and growth of our team, clients, stakeholders, and communities."
Work-Life Balance
Five-D runs a company-wide four-day week. In its own words: "A four-day work week (Monday–Thursday) helps us protect our weekends and our wellbeing." The firm publishes nothing about daily hours, the pay basis for the shortened week, leave entitlement, or flexible and remote working, so treat all of those as questions for the interview.
