About Firelight
What is Firelight?
Firelight "is an Indigenous-owned consultancy providing research and technical support to Indigenous Nations and organizations across Turtle Island." It is majority-owned by First Nations individuals from Ebb & Flow First Nation (Manitoba), Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in (Yukon) and Garden River First Nation (Ontario), and works in six core areas: Livelihoods (Indigenous knowledge research and socio-economics), Indigenous-led Assessment, Indigenous Negotiations, Mapping & GIS, Stewardship (ecology, planning and implementation) and Governance & Wellbeing. "Since 2010, Firelight has been trusted to do high quality work that centres Indigenous knowledge and values to protect rights and advance self-determination." It started as a group of 8 founding partners and has since worked with over 500 clients on more than 2,000 projects. It also hosts the Indigenous Mapping Collective and its annual Indigenous Mapping Workshop, which "has trained more than 2500 Indigenous mappers since 2014", and runs training such as an Indigenous-led assessment and negotiations course.
Where will I work?
"Our staff work in-office and remotely across Canada." Firelight's head office is in West Vancouver, on Xwmélch'tstn (Squamish Capilano 5 Reserve), and it has offices in Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton, Winnipeg (opened in October 2025) and Kahnawà:ke. Roles come "with options for remote or hybrid work". In September 2026 it was hiring an English- and French-speaking Researcher for its Indigenous-led Assessment team, hybrid in Kahnawà:ke, at $56,355 to $66,300, and taking general applications for all of its business units.
What is the Firelight team like?
Firelight has grown to "a diverse, expanding team of over 100 professionals committed to our guiding principles of relationships, accountability, quality, and responsibility." It wants "to make Firelight the choice employer for Indigenous people": it encourages Indigenous applicants to self-identify, and preference may be given to them. Its approach is "values-driven and community-centred", building relationships "based on mutual respect, trust, sharing and transparency" and providing information "for community leaders, knowledge holders, Elders, and experts to assist with critically important issues and realize community-identified needs and objectives." Its values are Relationships, Accountability, Quality ("methodologically rigorous") and Responsibility.
Work-Life Balance
Firelight offers a "Four-day work week (32 hours/week) with options for remote or hybrid work", and its Join Our Team page leads with the "4-day work week", "Remote and hybrid work arrangements" and "Flexible schedules for family and cultural obligations". Time off includes paid time off and holidays, Indigenous Cultural Leave ("Time off for cultural practices"), anniversary vacation and a winter break.
