PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The BBC’s West and South West Investigations team delivers high-impact original stories which resonate far beyond our region. Guided by the principles of public interest journalism, we aim to shine a light on key issues affecting our communities and uncover stories which matter to our audiences.

We are a truly multiplatform team, producing content for online, social, TV, radio and Sounds, as well as long-form output. As a senior journalist in the team, you’ll originate ambitious ideas with real public value and drive them through to delivery.

We are looking for an experienced journalist keen to reveal stories which set the news agenda. If you are a self-starter, ready to hit the ground running and looking for an opportunity to produce your best work, we’re keen to hear from you.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

Our small team covers the West and South West of England, including the Channel Islands and our people-focused investigations have reached millions across the UK, regularly featuring on national BBC News programmes and platforms. We collaborate with other teams, including BBC One, iPlayer and Sounds, alongside coverage for digital, TV and radio in the region.

This is an exciting and distinctive news patch, and the SJR based in Guernsey, and working across Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney and Sark will help strengthen and develop original investigative journalism from the Channel Islands – uncovering stories others can’t and adding extra depth to our local reporting.

This role is an opportunity to break exclusives, hold power to account and explain complex issues clearly and produce journalism people trust.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Generate, research and develop high-impact investigations and original in-depth stories.
  • Identify stories that matter most to Channel Islands audiences while resonating elsewhere.
  • Write, film and produce high-quality content for online and social platforms, as well as TV, radio and Sounds.
  • Proudly ‘own’ stories, communicating well with outlets across locations.
  • Navigate complex logistical, legal and editorial issues with the support of the SJTM and AE, managing risk and complying with Editorial Guidelines.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues in news, planning and other BBC teams, as well as Investigations.
  • Some travel, particularly between the islands, will be required.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Extremely strong editorial skills and experience of developing high-impact investigations and complex stories. You will have a detailed knowledge of the BBC’s editorial and social media guidelines.
  • Strong online writing skills and a flair for editorially ambitious storytelling across platforms.
  • Experience of self-shooting and editing on FCPX
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Channel Islands and local audiences. You must have a good network of contacts and be able to demonstrate that you are already able to win the trust of people in small island communities who are often nervous about speaking out.
  • Flexibility and enthusiasm for collaborating and working with different teams across the BBC to bring the best journalism to our audiences.

DESIRABLE:

  • Social media production skills
  • Data journalism skills.

If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we’d love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.

AS PART OF YOUR APPLICATION PLEASE SEND A SHOWREEL OF A MAXIMUM OF TEN MINUTES DURATION VIA DROPBOX TO [email protected] and [email protected]. Please contact either of them if you’d like to find out more about the role.
