Radiological Facility Environment Lead

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and collaborative individual to join our team as a Radiological Facility Environment Lead. This role offers an exciting opportunity to support the commissioning, management and operation of a new alpha radionuclide research facility, leading on environmental compliance and supporting safety and security compliance. You will report to the Nuclear Laboratory Control Manager (NLCM), working with colleagues in Safety, Security, Health Physics and Programme Coordination, as well as Academic and Technical teams, in a dynamic and inclusive environment.

You will be responsible for:

  • Environmental compliance and management, including regulatory permits and Best Available Techniques (BAT) submissions, maintenance and waste coordination, subject matter support for technical and project teams, training, safety reporting and adherence to environmental and hazardous material regulations.
  • Compliance, acting as the facility’s environmental and waste authority by engaging with regulators, setting performance targets, ensuring permit and BAT compliance, overseeing material movement reporting and supporting safe radioactive laboratory operation.
  • Emergency response, leading and developing the facility’s environmental monitoring programme to align with internal and external requirements and supporting demonstration exercises to maintain readiness.

About You

Essential Criteria:

  • Strong understanding of environmental regulatory requirements relevant to the role, ideally in higher-hazard laboratory facilities.
  • Familiarity with preparing and submitting Environmental Permits and reporting to regulators.
  • Experience in radionuclide research laboratories, managing sealed and open sources, preparing BAT-guided waste strategies and supporting laboratory compliance.

Desirable Criteria:

  • A good engineering or scientific degree.
  • Experience documenting examination, inspection, maintenance and test requirements for air concentration monitoring, process extract and filtration systems.
  • Experience specifying air concentration monitoring, process extract and filtration systems.
  • Knowledge of material safeguard and transport regulations.
  • Familiarity with education or research sectors.
