This position performs police work involving the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws, the investigation of crime, and other duties related to crime, disorder, and quality of life issues.

  • Answers calls for service, to include: disturbances, burglaries, suspicious circumstances,  traffic crashes, etc.
  • Patrols are assigned geographical areas of the city in order to respond to calls for service, proactively patrol, enforce laws, and address problems.
  • When assigned to specialized positions or duties, they fulfill all duties required of that specialized position as directed.   For example, officers may be assigned to:
    • Conduct Internal Affairs Investigations
    • Perform Crime Prevention duties such as home and building security surveys, attend community meetings and represent the Department, and provide educational presentations to the public
    • Prepare operational plans for City-wide and Special events
    • Partner with representatives from faith -based organizations and the private sector to improve Hometown Security (e.g. review and assist in developing emergency response plans for facilities)
    • Using the Department’s social media platforms, interact with the public through posts, messaging, and educational information
  • Writes reports and completes forms, including incident and accident reports.
  • Conducts traffic enforcement; directs traffic in congested areas as needed.
  • Renders medical aid to persons as able.
  • Testifies in judicial proceedings when necessary.
  • Conducts crime scene investigations to identify and gather important evidence; secures evidence for processing.
  • Investigates assigned cases; interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects; prepares required reports.
  • Secures and executes search warrants; conducts searches.
  • Secures and executes arrest warrants.
  • Assists with internal affairs investigations as assigned.
  • Assists other departmental units and other law enforcement agencies as requested.
  • Performs public service duties, such as assisting lost and stranded motorists, entering locked cars, providing transportation to citizens in need, etc.
  • Arrests and takes prisoners into custody; processes persons arrested.
  • Inspects all issued equipment, including weapons and patrol cars; monitors patrol car maintenance.
  • Attends training required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, the Department, or the supervisor.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Meet all requirements to be eligible for certification as a peace officer from the Texas Commission On Law Enforcement (TCOLE); preference may be given to TX licensed peace officers for lateral entry.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Possession of a valid Class “C” Driver’s License issued by the State of Texas.
  • Copy of DD214 showing the type of discharge, if applicable
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
