ITER Project Engineer

Overview:

We are seeking a US ITER Fueling Engineer who will focus on assisting in the design, validation, documentation, and fabrication preparations in support of the ITER Fueling and Impurity Injection systems).  This position resides in the Plasma Fueling Group in the US ITER Technical Systems Division, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the performance of all aspects of pellet injection system design, including requirements management, interface control, specification development, base calculations, statement of work preparation, and design review preparation
  • Participate in technical review of final design documents and drawings including Process Flow Diagrams, Control/Logic Diagrams, Process & Instrumentation Diagrams, Technical Specifications, analysis, calculations, and other design documentation
  • Write technical specifications and contribute to drawing production associated with the assembly of ITER components
  • Process and submit technical documents through the US ITER and IO document management systems
  • Work with TPOs, Team Leads, engineers, QA, and procurement within US ITER to develop technical documentation, and design packages detailing requirements
  • Assist the assigned Technical Project Officer (TPO) responsible for the procurement to lead evaluation of proposals for vendor selection and contract award
  • Manage design activities internal or external to the US ITER
  • Monitor fabrication contracts with industry for ITER components and report progress and variances to the TPO
  • Participate in the daily activities of a cross functional team of engineers and designers, including US ITER QA, Procurement, and Project Controls support, in supporting specific procurement contract activities
  • Manage configuration control activities during design and fabrication phases
  • Evaluate fabrication deviation requests and non-conformances from industrial suppliers
  • Foreign and domestic travel to fabricators, support subcontractors, and sponsor (IO) facilities are required

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS in Engineering, Physics, or other related technical field, with a minimum of 1 year of experience in the design, construction, and operation of mechanical, vacuum, or cryogenic systems. A combination of experience and education can be considered.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing and deign processes as well as project management methods.
  • Must be highly motivated, self-directed, and able to work in a team environment
  • Must have effective problem solving, time management, and communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team to evaluate problems, investigate and propose solutions
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in Engineering or related technical field or related to Project Management
  • Thorough knowledge of operating principles of piping systems, vacuum pumps, and cryogenic systems, with an understanding of how to select appropriate equipment and materials for specific cryogenic environments
  • Prior experience working with engineers and designers responsible for cryogenic systems and associated control systems
  • Experience in supporting complex technical projects and familiarization with design and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to apply industry codes and standards to document, design, and fabrication activities
  •  Demonstrated ability to contribute to support the successful achievement of project goals, utilization project management tools to support execution of project scope, interface effectively with the TPO, and interface effectively with vendors and fabricators as directed by the TPO
  • Familiarity of manufacturing processes including associated inspection/certification techniques

Special Requirements:

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This is a temporary 12-month position.  The appointment length will be up to 12 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
