Grant and Asset Accountant - Full‑Time

Location: Salisbury, MD

Salary Range: $50,000 –$75,000 annually

Schedule: 4 ‑day, 36-hour work week — Monday through Thursday

Position Summary

The Grant and Asset Accountant is responsible for managing the financial reporting, compliance, and accounting functions for grant-funded behavioral health programs and organizational capital assets. This position ensures accurate tracking of restricted funding, proper allocation of program expenses, timely reporting to funders, and compliance with federal, state, and local requirements. The Grant and Asset Accountant also maintains the fixed asset system, supports capital purchases, and assists with audits and internal controls.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage accounting and reporting for federal, state, local, and private grant-funded behavioral health programs.

  • Track grant budgets, expenditures, and restricted funds to ensure compliance with funding requirements.

  • Prepare grant financial reports, reimbursement requests, and supporting documentation.

  • Maintain the organization’s fixed asset records, including additions, disposals, reconciliations, and depreciation.

  • Ensure proper capitalization and tracking of equipment, vehicles, facility improvements, and program-related assets.

  • Prepare journal entries and perform monthly reconciliations related to grants and fixed assets.

  • Support month-end and year-end close, including schedules for audits and funder monitoring.

  • Collaborate with program leaders and internal departments to ensure accurate expense coding and documentation.

  • Assist with improving internal controls and grant/asset tracking processes.

  • Participate in all required agency training programs.

  • Expand grants to include restricted donations and funding streams outside of typical medical billing. (I think rolling in SHP rents would be helpful).

  • Request complete cost reimbursements for grants.

  • Create SOPs and internal control structure for funding streams.

  • Work with the CFO on the below and other team members engaged in the applicable funding stream.

  • Tracking assets including IT, vehicles, and fixed assets

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • Minimum 3 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit, behavioral health, healthcare, or human services setting.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Experience with grant accounting, restricted funds, and compliance reporting.

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting.

  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, reconciliation tools).

  • Experience requires significant excel capabilities, problem solving perspective and able to work on time deadlines, team oriented and collaborative.

  • Experience using accounting software/ERP systems (e.g., Sage or similar).

  • Experience with behavioral health funding streams (e.g., state behavioral health grants, SAMHSA, HRSA, Medicaid-funded programs, county/local contracts).

  • Experience supporting Single Audit requirements.

  • Experience with indirect cost allocations and cost reporting.

  • CPA or other accounting credential (preferred but not required).
