About VotingWorks

What is VotingWorks?

VotingWorks is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2018 by Ben Adida to make US elections more trustworthy. It is the only nonprofit voting-system vendor in the United States and the only producer of an open-source voting system used in US elections — voters can mark ballots by hand or touchscreen and cast voter-verifiable paper ballots. The company's two flagship products are VxSuite (the voting system, currently deployed in jurisdictions in Mississippi and New Hampshire) and Arlo (open-source post-election audit software used by 12 states including Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Rhode Island, Virginia, Washington, Texas and South Carolina). Arlo was developed by VotingWorks with support from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Funding comes from three streams: sale and support of technology, government contracts and grants (including CISA and NSF), and foundation and individual donations. The company's mission is summed up plainly on their site: "We think American Democracy is important, and we believe the technology that underpins our elections should be better."

Where will I work?

VotingWorks is fully distributed across the United States. Staff are located in California, Texas, Washington, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Michigan, New York and Georgia. Most roles are remote (any US location); some require travel to election jurisdictions, assembly sites and conferences (continental US, near a major airport).

What is the VotingWorks team like?

The team is small — between 18 and 21 people based on public sources, all working in a "mostly distributed organization." Leadership: Executive Director Ben Adida (PhD; founder, speaks widely on election technology and integrity). The team is committed to transparency: all source code is publicly available and the development process — feature builds, bug fixes, and tests — happens in the open. VotingWorks works with leading academics in voting security and usability.

Work-Life Balance

VotingWorks offers the option for a 4-day work week at 80% salary (32 hours, Monday–Thursday); the engineering team chooses to work the 80% schedule. Other roles can work the standard 40-hour, Monday–Friday schedule. Salary bands are public on JDs (Arlo Customer Success Manager: $96k–$160k; Head of Hardware: $192k–$300k). The company offers a flexible work schedule, asking staff to be available roughly 4 hours per weekday during Pacific business hours for coordination. Open PTO is provided, plus 11 paid holidays and an end-of-year office closure between Christmas and New Year's Day.
