About Materiom
What is Materiom?
Materiom is, in its own words, "an innovation platform for regenerative materials R&D" and "an impact-focused, non-profit tech startup with the mission to accelerate the research, development, and uptake of bio-based materials that have a net-positive impact on the planet." The vision it publishes is "a world where materials regenerate nature and support human health" — materials "made from abundant natural ingredients that are used, broken down, and used again", intended to replace petrochemical plastics.
Its open platform, the Materiom Commons, is described as "a large open database of material formulations and AI features to support a community of 20,000+ scientists, designers, engineers and entrepreneurs to quickly and easily find bio-based solutions for packaging and textiles applications." Alongside it, a research team "works with local communities to investigate regenerative value chains and the viability of regional, renewable biomass sources." Materiom is candid about where it stands: "In 2026, we're at an inflection point: moving from an open, philanthropically-funded platform toward a commercial product, while keeping our public-good mission intact."
Where will I work?
London. The office is in Shoreditch, and Materiom's own benefits list describes "Flexible Hybrid Working: A highly flexible scheme that includes weekly days at the office (London) and at home, as well as options for temporary remote work." Read the posting carefully, because the arrangement is role-dependent — a current AI Engineer role is listed as "Hybrid (London office)" while a Research Scientist role running wet-lab formulation experiments is "Full-time, on-site". Leadership is spread wider than the office: the two co-CEOs are based in London and Santiago, the CTO in San Francisco, and the communications lead in Cape Town.
What is the Materiom team like?
Small, senior and deliberately interdisciplinary: "a small, interdisciplinary team of around twelve people spanning materials science, AI/ML, software engineering, circular economy, and design." That mix is real. The published team includes a computational materials scientist with a PhD from Imperial College London, a scientific lead who previously ran R&D at seaweed-packaging company Notpla, an AI engineer, and a CTO who was a senior research scientist at Google. Materiom is co-founded and co-led by Dr Alysia Garmulewicz and Liz Corbin. The company describes its culture as "defined by deep, interdisciplinary collaboration", says the work "is genuinely novel", and asks for people who can operate with "high agency & autonomy in an ambiguous environment".
Work-Life Balance
Materiom publishes its time-off policy in full on every advert: "Generous Paid Time Off: 30 days of paid holiday per year for full-time positions (adjusted pro-rata for part-time positions), in addition to all UK bank holidays." Hybrid working is described as "highly flexible", splitting the week between the London office and home with "options for temporary remote work", and the company runs "International Retreats: Regular company retreats, often held in international locations, to build connection and celebrate progress." Materiom publishes no four-day week or compressed-hours policy.
