Jet Propulsion Laboratory
NASA's leading center for robotic space exploration.
Who we are
The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is a federally funded research and development center managed by Caltech for NASA.
Established in 1936, JPL has been at the forefront of space exploration, sending the first American satellite into orbit and developing a series of groundbreaking missions to explore our solar system and beyond. Based in Pasadena, California, JPL's campus-like environment fosters innovation and collaboration among approximately 6,300 employees.
What we do
JPL is renowned for its role in robotic space missions, having designed, built, and operated a range of exploratory spacecraft. These include the Mars rovers, the Voyager missions, and the recently launched Perseverance rover. JPL's expertise spans Earth science and planetary missions to astrophysics and technology development, contributing to our understanding of the universe and advancing technologies for future missions. JPL also operates NASA's Deep Space Network, facilitating communication with interplanetary spacecraft.
