About British Ecological Society

What is British Ecological Society?

The British Ecological Society (BES) is the world's oldest ecological society, founded in 1913 to advance the science of ecology through research, education, and policy. The Society publishes some of the most prestigious journals in the field, including the Journal of Ecology, Journal of Animal Ecology, Functional Ecology, Methods in Ecology and Evolution, Ecological Solutions and Evidence, and People and Nature.

With members across more than 120 countries, the BES supports ecological research through grants, awards, and training programmes. It engages with policymakers to ensure ecological science informs environmental decision-making, and runs public engagement and education initiatives to inspire the next generation of ecologists. The Society has adopted a 32-hour, 4-day working week at full pay and achieved 4 Day Week Foundation Gold accreditation.

Where will I work?

The British Ecological Society is headquartered at Charles Darwin House, 12 Roger Street, London, WC1N 2JU. The Society operates a hybrid working model, with staff splitting their time between the London office and working from home. The central London location provides easy access to the broader scientific community, policymakers, and partner organisations.

What is the team like?

With approximately 38 employees, the BES team includes publishing professionals, research grants administrators, policy specialists, communications experts, events coordinators, and corporate support staff. The team is united by a shared passion for ecology and environmental science, working to support the Society's mission of advancing ecological knowledge.

As a learned society with over a century of history, the BES combines academic rigour with a progressive, modern workplace culture. The adoption of the 4-day week reflects a forward-thinking approach to organisational management that matches the Society's commitment to evidence-based decision-making.

Work-Life Balance

The British Ecological Society operates a genuine 4-day working week at 32 hours per week with no reduction in pay. The Society has achieved 4 Day Week Foundation Gold accreditation, the highest level of recognition for organisations that have successfully adopted a reduced-hours working model.

The hybrid working model provides additional flexibility, allowing staff to work from home on their working days. This combination of a shorter working week and location flexibility creates an exceptional work-life balance package that is particularly attractive in the London employment market.
