Job Description
As a Special Effects Artist (FX) at Ubisoft Montreal, you will design and integrate real-time special effects that support gameplay and enhance immersion. You will create effects such as explosions, smoke, fire, rain, snow, water, and other environmental and cinematic effects, directly in the Unreal game engine.
You will combine artistic creativity and technical approach to produce effects that are readable, performant, and consistent with the game's vision, working closely with programming, design, and art direction teams.
What you will do
- Collaborate with direction teams to understand the creative vision and define visual effects priorities
- Create environmental and cinematic special effects in real-time using particle systems in the Unreal game engine
- Produce textures, flipbooks, and 2D visual elements used specifically for effects
- Implement effects using simple meshes as effect supports when necessary
- Integrate and adjust special effects directly in the Unreal game engine
- Work with the programming team to assess technical needs and improve tools within the team
- Respect performance and readability constraints related to gameplay
- Optimize and debug effects based on game testing results and feedback from collaborating teams
- Adjust certain effects based on community feedback after launch, when required
Qualifications
What you bring to the team
- Strong expertise in real-time special effects creation for video games
- Experience with particle systems and FX workflows in Unreal
- Proficiency with 2D tools for creating textures, masks, flipbooks, and sprites dedicated to effects
- Ability to create or adjust simple meshes used for special effects
- Understanding of artistic fundamentals applied to special effects, including light, color, and readability
- Knowledge of technical and performance constraints specific to real-time effects
- Ability to receive and integrate feedback constructively
- Collaborative approach, attention to detail, and commitment to quality
