Job Description:

Material QA/QC Engineer – Cycle Track & Roads Projects

Abu Dhabi, UAE

What You'll Be Doing

• Perform laboratory and field testing of asphalt, concrete, sub‑base, and soil specifically for cycle tracks, pedestrian routes, and associated road infrastructure in accordance with project specifications and authority standards.

• Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date test logs, sample traceability records, and material registers; ensure all test results are linked to specific cycle track sections, chainages, and suppliers.

• Monitor sampling, testing, and material deliveries for cycle track works (asphalt wearing and binder courses, coloured surfacing, base and sub‑base layers, curb and edging units); verify mix designs, calibration of testing equipment, and compliance with approved designs.

• Review and process contractor material and technical submittals relevant to cycle tracks (asphalt and concrete mixes, coloured surfacing systems, anti‑skid coatings, jointing materials, curbs, tactile tiles, etc.), including method statements, ITPs, and inspection requests.

• Coordinate and perform site inspections for cycle track construction, including formation preparation, compaction, paving, finishing, and curing; confirm compliance with drawings, specifications, and approved materials.

• Check cycle track alignment, crossfall, and surface regularity; support inspection of drainage arrangements, expansion joints, and interface with adjacent road and landscape works to ensure safety and durability.

• Identify, document, and track material non‑conformances for cycle track and road elements; issue NCRs where required, verify corrective actions on site, and support audits and handover processes with complete quality records.

• Implement the project Quality Management System and relevant Quality Plans; ensure consistent QA/QC practices and HSE compliance across contractors, subcontractors, third‑party laboratories, and supervision staff.

• Coordinate and oversee subconsultants and third‑party labs performing cycle track and pavement material testing; manage scheduling, sample dispatch, testing requests, and review of results.

• Maintain project material records, office files, daily diaries, and test summary sheets for cycle track works; prepare daily and weekly reports, quality dashboards, and trend charts for material performance.

• Verify that delivered materials for cycle tracks (binders, aggregates, pigments, coatings, curbs, tiles) match approvals and are properly stored, handled, and protected on site in accordance with manufacturer recommendations.

• Perform engineering calculations related to pavement layer thicknesses, density and compaction, concrete strength development, and skid resistance; assist in preparing graphs, charts, and quality control procedures and reports specific to cycle track performance.

• Collect and file CoCs, MSDS, calibration certificates, authority approvals, and inspection tags; provide technical guidance to junior QA/QC staff and lab technicians, and support job safety practices and incident reporting.

What Required Skills You'll Bring

• B.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline.

• Minimum of 10 years’ experience in roads and infrastructure projects, including dedicated cycle tracks, shared paths, or non‑motorized transport facilities.

• Strong ability to read and interpret drawings, plans, alignments, typical sections, and cross‑sections related to cycle tracks and associated road works.

• Thorough familiarity with construction processes for pavements, cycle tracks, curbs, drainage, and utility corridors in urban infrastructure environments.

• Demonstrated experience in material testing and QA/QC for asphalt, concrete, sub‑base, and soil, including density, compaction, Marshall, Superpave, and concrete strength tests.

• Preferably experienced working within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and familiar with local authority requirements (e.g., ADM, DMT and other relevant entities) for cycle track and road approvals.

• Proficiency in using material testing equipment and basic engineering calculations related to pavement design and quality control.

• Strong documentation and record‑keeping skills, capable of maintaining complete and traceable material and test records suitable for audits and project handover.

What Desired Skills You'll Bring

• Proven ability to comply with and coordinate multiple client, authority, and industry requirements on complex urban infrastructure projects that include cycle tracks, footpaths, and roads.

• Experience with quality management systems and standards such as ISO 9001, ASTM, AASHTO, BS, ASME, ANSI or equivalent organizations, particularly in relation to pavement materials and surface treatments.

• Previous work within a Construction Supervision / Consultant environment in Abu Dhabi or the wider UAE, dealing with contractors, subconsultants, and client representatives.

• Strong coordination and communication skills to work effectively with multidisciplinary site teams, including highway, pavement, landscape, traffic, and HSE engineers.

• Awareness of user safety requirements for cycle tracks (surface smoothness, skid resistance, joint treatment, transitions, and interfaces with roads and crossings) and ability to raise and follow up related quality issues.

• Solid understanding of HSE principles, with the capability to recognize hazardous conditions in construction of cycle tracks and road works and initiate appropriate corrective actions.

• Sound judgment and strong problem‑solving skills for material‑related and construction quality issues; able to propose practical solutions aligned with specifications and authority standards.

• Well‑organized, with strong skills in documentation, reporting, and maintaining quality records, including preparation of material status reports, NCR logs, test summaries, and close‑out documentation for cycle track and road components.
