About Women's Budget Group
What is Women's Budget Group?
The UK Women's Budget Group (WBG) is the UK's leading feminist economics think tank. From their about page: "We put feminism into economics and economics into feminism." WBG is the only UK-wide think tank focused on exploring the economy through a gendered lens, and the leading feminist organisation dedicated to the economy.
WBG is a research, advocacy and training organisation advancing gender equality in policymaking through feminist approaches to economics. The organisation occupies "a unique position, acting as a link between feminist academics, the women's voluntary sector and think tanks and policymakers" — drawing on a network of pro-bono experts from academia, the new economics and the women's movements, alongside a professional staff team. WBG works in partnership with sister organisations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and internationally to build capacity around policy analysis and economic debate.
The current five-year strategy runs from 2023 to 2028. Recent work areas include violence against women and girls (VAWG), labour market, pensions, climate change, austerity through a gender lens, and a "care-led recovery and a green and caring economy."
Where will I work?
WBG's office is in Vauxhall, London. From a live JD: "Must be resident in the UK with the right to work in the UK. Post is hybrid with requirement to be in the office at least once a week. Office is in Vauxhall, London." The model is hybrid: at least one in-office day per week with flexibility on the others.
What is the Women's Budget Group team like?
WBG describes itself as "a small organisation that punches well above its weight." The professional staff team is supported by a network of pro-bono experts from academia, the new economics and women's movements. WBG is committed to diversity and inclusion, applying positive action under section 159 of the Equality Act in relation to disability or race — "if we have two candidates of equal merit in our process, we will seek to take forward the disabled or Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic candidate in order to diversify our staff team."
WBG's values (verbatim) are: Human Rights ("based on substantive equality and respect for human rights, where care is valued and shared and which allows everyone to live in dignity"), Feminism ("we recognise that sex-determined social roles have given rise across the world to a variety of forms of patriarchal society"), and Intersectionality ("gendered structures of inequality intersect with other structures of inequality including those based on class, race, disability and so on").
Principles of work include Partnership & Internationalism, Expertise and Learning, Diversity, Pluralism and Respect for Difference, Integrity, and Political Independence (WBG does not affiliate with any political party).
Work-Life Balance
WBG has adopted a permanent 30-hour working week — verbatim from the careers page: "We have adopted a permanent 30-hour working week reflecting our commitment to live our values and aligning our operations with our vision of a green and caring economy." Live JDs confirm: "30 hours per week. We operate a shorter working week with 30 hours the equivalent of full time. We are happy to consider a secondment role and/or flexible working arrangements. Some out of hours working will be required for which TOIL will be given."
WBG is "an accredited London Living Wage employer" — a public commitment to a competitive base salary floor for all staff.
