About ReScape

What is ReScape?

ReScape is a California nonprofit that educates and advocates for a whole-systems regenerative approach to landscaping using nature-based solutions. The organisation addresses climate change, water challenges, and biodiversity loss through landscaping education, workforce development, and policy. Verbatim from /about: "ReScape California initially began as the Bay-Friendly Landscaping & Gardening Coalition in 2009. The Coalition evolved to become ReScape California in 2015, and grew further when EcoLandscape California merged with ReScape in 2017."

ReScape has moved away from "sustainable" practices to "regenerative" ones: "While sustainability and regeneration share common goals of environmental and social well-being, they differ significantly in their approach and scope. Sustainability emphasizes maintaining balance and minimizing harm... In contrast, regeneration is proactive and restorative, aiming to create systems that not only sustain but also improve and replenish the environment, communities, and economies."

Four interconnected programs anchor the work:

  • Diverse Workforce Training — "Our nature-based, whole systems 8 Principles approach trains professionals in policy-driven regenerative landscape standards, creating demand through education and partnerships with public agencies, businesses, and communities."
  • Climate Equity — "Our approach honors the fact that many communities have been stewarding land sustainably for generations. The only workable climate change solutions call in a new map that weaves together ancient wisdom with contemporary innovation."
  • Advocacy & Policy — "Landscapes produce 12% of GHG emissions. Opportunities exist to reduce emissions and increase the potential to sequester carbon."
  • Rated Landscapes — third-party certification for regenerative landscapes (with a Qualified Professionals directory)
