About NTEN

Who we are

NTEN is a nonprofit organisation helping nonprofit professionals create positive social change through the skillful and equitable use of technology. Founded in 2000, NTEN is based in Portland, Oregon, with a remote-first team distributed across multiple US states and time zones. The organisation's mission, in CEO Amy Sample Ward's words, is to build "a world where missions and movements are successful through the skillful and equitable use of technology."

What we do

NTEN supports nonprofit professionals through a wide range of programmes and services. Our flagship event, the Nonprofit Technology Conference (NTC), brings thousands of nonprofit professionals together each year — 27NTC will be hosted in Portland and virtually in March 2027. Beyond NTC, NTEN runs online courses and webinars, certificate programmes, research and publications on nonprofit technology, an active job board, community spaces, and the broader work of advocating for equity in the social sector.

We focus on helping nonprofit organisations use technology strategically to achieve their missions, from small grassroots groups to large institutions.

Working at NTEN — the four-day week

In June 2023, CEO Amy Sample Ward announced NTEN's transition to a permanent four-day workweek: "June 30 is our final Friday work day at NTEN, and we will begin the four-day, 32-hour week starting in July." NTEN operates on the 100|80|100 model — "80% time at 100% pay for 100% of outcomes." All staff work Monday through Thursday only, and the policy has been permanent since July 2023.

The transition involved extensive preparation: legal consultation on state-by-state full-time-employment definitions, an accessibility survey of staff, sub-teams to evaluate meeting frequency and rollout communications, and a dedicated "32-hour transition" Slack channel for shared resources.

Hiring with an equity lens

NTEN's hiring is intentionally equity-first. The team prioritises "lived experience in digital literacy, inclusion, equity, program management, and community organizing over formal credentials." Salaries are required on all job listings, and the organisation models the equity-and-inclusion values it advocates for in the sector.
