About Mental Health Advocacy Services
Who We Are
Mental Health Advocacy Services (MHAS), established in 1977, champions the rights of low-income adults and children with mental health disabilities across Los Angeles County. For over four decades, we have stood at the intersection of mental health and justice, providing critical legal advocacy to those who need it most.
Our mission is driven by an unwavering commitment to empowerment, dignity, equity, and collaboration. We envision a future where people with mental health disabilities thrive free from stigma and injustice, with full access to their rights and the resources they need to live fulfilling lives.
What We Do
We offer free legal services focusing on critical issues that impact the daily lives of people with mental health disabilities, including:
- Government benefits advocacy and appeals
- Housing discrimination cases
- Homelessness prevention
- Protection of civil rights
- Access to mental health treatment and services
Beyond direct client services, MHAS engages in impactful litigation and policy work that creates systemic change. We serve as a vital community resource, providing training and technical assistance to mental health professionals, service providers, and other advocates. Our comprehensive approach addresses both individual needs and broader structural barriers that affect our client community.
Working at MHAS
MHAS fosters a collegial, inclusive culture that genuinely respects work-life balance—we don't just talk about it, we live it. Our team of dedicated attorneys, advocates, and support staff work collaboratively in an environment that values each person's contributions and well-being.
We offer a four-day work week, remote work flexibility, and wellness opportunities that recognize the importance of sustainable advocacy work. We understand that to effectively serve our clients, our team members must have the space to recharge and maintain their own mental health.
We are deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, recognizing that these values enhance our mission's effectiveness and strengthen our ability to serve our diverse client community. Our workplace culture reflects the dignity and respect we advocate for in our legal work.
