About Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia

What is Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS)?

Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia (IONS) is a Halifax-based nonprofit support and advocacy organisation. Its stated purpose: "to contribute to a just and equitable society by empowering people in the Community Impact Sector to be leaders of transformative change." IONS advocates for, supports and amplifies the work of Nova Scotia's nonprofit and charitable sector — a community of more than 6,400 registered nonprofits, charities and Community Interest Companies that collectively account for ~4.5% of the province's labour force and generate volunteer hours equivalent to 3.4% of Nova Scotia's GDP.

IONS was originally established as the Community Sector Council of Nova Scotia — one of 14 Industry Sector Councils in the province set up to address labour challenges, build organisational capacity, and increase access to resources. Over time the focus broadened to include convening diverse organisations, building networks, conducting and distributing research, sharing promising practices, and amplifying the sector's vital work. The rebrand to IONS reflected this broader role championing the Community Impact Sector as a leader of transformative change.

Where will I work?

IONS is based in Mi'kma'ki (Halifax, Nova Scotia) — the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi'kmaw people, covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship first signed in 1726. The team works hybrid from Nova Scotia with some colleagues fully remote within Canada. Mailing address: PO Box 29042, RPO HAL SHOP CENTRE, Halifax, NS, B3L 4T8.

What is the IONS team like?

Leadership includes Executive Director Annika Voltan and Associate Director Adam Jespersen, with content strategist Lydia Phillip and other staff named in third-party press. Internal accountability follows a four-R framework inspired by the Mi'kmaw concept of Netukulimk (sustainability/stewardship): Relational ("create spaces and opportunities to connect that intentionally build trust, alignment and mutual care"), Responsive ("deepen our understanding of what people need and act on it"), Reciprocity ("make sure information, opportunities, and impact flow in both directions") and Reimagining ("look inward and outward to spark new ideas for change"). The three organisational values are Abundance, Courage and Trust.

Work-Life Balance

IONS officially switched to a 32-hour, four-day workweek in March 2024 after completing a pilot. CBC News reported the change verbatim: "Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia, which supports the non-profit sector, officially switched to the four-day workweek in March." Hours were reduced; pay was not. Content Strategist Lydia Phillip described the impact: "That three-day weekend really does wonders when you show up again on Monday. It's a totally different attitude… coming back to work, feeling so much more refreshed and energized, and it's easier for that creativity to flow when you're not feeling stretched so thin or so burnt out." Researcher Stephanie Gilbert (Cape Breton University), who analysed the pilot, reported "a significant decrease in burnout, a significant decrease in stress over the course of this pilot."

IONS is one of four Nova Scotia nonprofits that have officially adopted 32-hour weeks after successful pilots, alongside New Dawn Enterprises, the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design, and the Ecology Action Centre.

Perks and Benefits

IONS publishes detailed job postings on a sector-wide job board rather than on its own careers page; specific benefit packages vary by role and are listed directly in each posting. The most consistently documented perks beyond the 4-day workweek are pay maintained at full-time levels, benefits from day one, flexible hybrid work, and four weeks of vacation.
