About dhis2

Who We Are

DHIS2 is a free and open-source software platform for health data collection, analysis and use — and it has become a global standard within international development since its beginnings in post-Apartheid South Africa in 1994. Ministries of Health in low- and middle-income countries plus organisations including the International Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders use DHIS2 to support the control and treatment of diseases like COVID-19, HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis. Beyond health, DHIS2 is used in education, sanitation and agriculture. The platform is led by the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo, working in collaboration with global partners including the WHO, UNICEF, CDC, the World Bank, and DHIS2 experts in the HISP regional network.

Where will I work?

DHIS2's main office is at the University of Oslo (HISP Centre, Department of Informatics), but the project has embraced the online workplace. Core team members work remotely from more than 30 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Americas. The careers page is explicit: "the only criteria for applying is a good internet connection and a willingness to overlap with working hours in Oslo for at least part of the day." The diversity policy commits to "accommodating different modes of work, locations, time zones, and flexible working hours."

What is the DHIS2 team like?

The core team is organised around five functional specialties: Software (developing and maintaining the platform used at global scale), Implementation (technical assistance, requirements assessment, feedback loops from real-world use), Research (action research on information systems), Training & Communication (educational materials and capacity-building), and Project Support (project administration, finance, HR, vendor relationships). The workplace model is "flat and flexible" — prioritising autonomy and collaborative decision-making over rigid hierarchies. DHIS2 publishes a public Diversity Pledge committing to diversifying the talent pipeline, developing an inclusive hiring process, continuous measurement against ethnic/geographic/gender benchmarks, and fostering an inclusive work environment. The pledge actively encourages applications from women, non-binary people, ethnic minorities, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ people, and applicants from the Global South.

Work-Life Balance

DHIS2 offers all positions on a flexible-hours basis under the University of Oslo's standard employment frameworks — including the option to elect a 4-day, 80%-salary working arrangement. The careers page emphasises flexible working hours and "different modes of work, locations, time zones." Combined with the fully-distributed model (30+ countries), the policy lets the team work in ways that fit their lives while keeping enough overlap with the Oslo timezone for collaboration. The annual DHIS2 Conference (15-18 June 2026) brings the global team together once a year.

Perks and Benefits

DHIS2's benefit package draws on the University of Oslo's academic-employment framework — including statutory Norwegian benefits, pension and parental leave — alongside the flexible-hours arrangement and remote-work freedom. Career development runs through the DHIS2 Academy (general and specialised online courses), action-research opportunities in collaboration with UiO's informatics department, and conference participation. The annual conference plus the regional HISP network give the team meaningful in-person and cross-cultural interaction; the open-source mission gives daily work tangible global health impact across 100+ countries on 6 continents.
