About British Society for Rheumatology

Who We Are

The British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) is the UK's leading membership organisation for rheumatology, bringing together expertise from across the profession. Registered as Company No. 3470316 and Charity No. 1067124, we're a small organisation with huge ambitions, headquartered at Bride House, 18-20 Bride Lane, London EC4Y 8EE. We harness a wide variety of experience and skills — rheumatologists, nurses, allied health practitioners, and academics — to ensure we're supporting our members to the very best of our combined ability. Patients and carers are involved at every step, helping us ensure that physicians and clinicians are equipped to provide high-quality care.

A 4-day-week employer with award-winning culture

Verbatim from our careers page: "We're a 4 day week employer, which at BSR means working your full time hours (31.5 each week) over 5 days." Our hybrid setup means we offer a lot of flexibility — you're not tied to a 9am–5pm day. This could look like a 4.5-day week, or you can tailor your working hours to suit your individual needs and responsibilities.

We're proud to be an award-winning organisation:

  • 10th most inspiring workplace on the global Inspiring Workplaces list
  • Top small employer (2023) by Inspiring Workplaces
  • Most flexible recruitment process by Working Families
  • Living Wage accredited employer

  • Income protection — 50% of your last salary until normal retirement age (up to 65, or male state pension age).
  • Maternity / shared parental / adoption — 6 weeks at full pay, 33 weeks at half pay, followed by 13 weeks at the statutory rate. Re-induction supported on return.

Wellbeing

Our wellbeing strategy covers six pillars: Mental, Physical, Financial, Digital, Social, and Psychological safety. Specific provisions include free clinical psychologist access via HelloSelf, an Employee Assistance Programme (free confidential counselling), Mental Health First Aiders, the BUPA healthcare cash plan (with the option to add children or partners), Zurich Plus (24/7 virtual GP, mental health support, Physiotherapy, Dietitian consultations), free flu vaccinations, free period products, and contributions towards eyesight tests and prescriptions. Our Social Squad runs activities both virtual and in-person, including an organisation-wide volunteering day.

Time off and learning

30 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays, plus an extra day for moving house and bank-holiday swops (swap a bank holiday for another day's leave). Sabbaticals at any point are considered case-by-case. On the learning side, we offer a huge range of in-house and external opportunities — a thorough induction programme, development opportunities for line managers, wellbeing-based learning sessions, and we'll cover the cost of professional membership if it's required for your role.

Hybrid working at BSR

Nearly all our roles are hybrid. We all come into the office once a month for all-staff activities — these in-person days have a real buzz — and teams decide how often it's productive to come in based on collaboration needs. Our contracts are office-based, which means we don't pay for travel to and from the office. If you're looking for a role where you work in a busy office Monday-Friday, we might not be the best environment for you — but if you value flexibility and meaningful work in service of the rheumatology community, BSR could be a fit.
