About Scene Connect

What is Scene Connect?

Scene Connect is a social enterprise based in Edinburgh focused on the low-carbon transition through community-led renewable energy. Verbatim from /about: "We are a Social Enterprise focused on strengthening communities through consultancy, research and the development of low-carbon ICT products. We work across the renewable energy, carbon management, and energy access sectors. Founded in Edinburgh in 2011, we have built a reputation as one of UK's foremost community energy organisations." The trademarked entity is Scene Connect Ltd, registered in the United Kingdom.

Scene operates four workstreams: Consultancy (community renewable-energy feasibility through to installation, with particular expertise in shared ownership, local energy systems, peer-to-peer trading and geothermal district heating); Products (smart energy-system R&D with affiliated spin-out companies Inclusive Energy — Cloud Solar and Smart Biogas — and Farm-Hand — precision irrigation, originating from the SCORRES collaboration with Auroville Consulting, Heriot-Watt University, Findhorn College and Auraventi); Net Zero Services (ISO 14640-certified carbon auditing for SMEs); and Research (econometric, geospatial and sociological analysis in community energy and energy access, including the annual "Community Energy: State of the Sector" report). Current in-house R&D products include EMBLEM, a modular mini-grid model for Africa and India, and ZUoS, an energy-services platform for UK energy suppliers and virtual power plant operators. Scene also spun out Urjaa Samadhan in 2016 to improve electricity access in Odisha, India.

Where will I work?

Scene has two UK offices and projects worldwide. Verbatim from /about: "Scene has offices in Edinburgh, and Liverpool - with projects ongoing in countries around the world." HQ address verbatim from the footer: "Argyle House, 3 Lady Lawson Street, Edinburgh, EH3 9DR, Scotland — Tel: +44 (0) 131 297 2955." The DB sidebar indicates hybrid working with flexible remote arrangements.

What is the Scene Connect team like?

The published /sceneteam page lists 16 named team members across two Co-Directors, a Non-Executive Director / co-founder, an Office Manager, software developers, simulations engineers, low-carbon consultants and a Solutions Architect. Co-Directors are Alex Schlicke (a landscape architect and planner who has helped secure consent for over 100MW of generating capacity) and Sandy Robinson (community energy and energy-access researcher who manages Scene's annual "Community Energy: State of the Sector" report). The Solutions Architect Jim O'Donnell brings 16 years in demand-side response, having joined pioneering aggregator Flexitricity in 2008 after completing a PhD on Voltage Management with Distributed Generation at the University of Edinburgh. Other senior staff include Senior Developers Howard Cox (joined July 2021), Donald MacSween (electrical and electronic engineering background since 1984), David MacIver and Anne-Lise Lambin; Simulations Lead Jeremy Rawlings (joined February 2023); Simulations Engineer Sheena Fernandez (PhD candidate at Heriot-Watt); and Low Carbon Consultants Ross Williamson (MSc Heriot-Watt), Rhys Watkins (MSc Liverpool), Ahmad Aldaker (MEng Manchester) and Elliott Price (PhD Liverpool). Office Manager Premhatai Schlicke leads administration and HR. Co-founder Vijay Bhopal stepped down as Co-Director in August 2021 and continues as Non-Executive Director.

Work-Life Balance

The DB-recorded schedule policy is a 4-day pro-rata week at 32 hours, very flexible, with 28 days of PTO plus public holidays. However, no current primary source on scene.community references a 4-day-week, 32-hour or other non-standard work-schedule policy — the site has no /careers or /jobs page, and the /sceneteam, /about and /our-work-overview pages are silent on employee schedule. The schedule_type field has been retained as a protected DB value but is flagged for review: DB language "We are open to 3, 4 or 5 days per week" reads as employer-side openness rather than a firm internal policy.

Perks and Benefits

Scene Connect does not publish an employee benefits list on careers, about or team pages. As a social enterprise focused on community energy projects, we've retained no benefit bullets in the absence of any first-party source.
