About Kickstarter

What is Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is the leading crowdfunding platform for creative projects across film, games, music, art, design, and technology. Since founding in 2009, the company's mission to "help bring creative projects to life" has been powered by the creators behind the work — together generating "billions of dollars in pledges" toward project launches around the world. Kickstarter is a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC) — its commitment to creative work and arts is embedded in its corporate charter.

The company commits 5% of its after-tax profit each year to organisations that fight systemic inequality and promote arts education; full-time employees nominate recipient organisations and can apply to join the committee that directs contributions.

Where will I work?

Kickstarter is a fully remote workforce, currently able to support employees in 14 US states (CA, CO, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, NC, NJ, NY, OR, VA, VT, and WA), the United Kingdom, and two Canadian provinces (Ontario and British Columbia). The team continues to expand the list as it grows its distributed workforce. The legal entity is headquartered in New York.

What is the Kickstarter team like?

Kickstarter "invests in the growth and success of our team, treating employees as whole people and empowering them with the autonomy and space to participate in decisions that shape their work and our company." The team is small but deeply curated, with active Affinity Groups including Black At Kickstarter, Parents, Azns, Queerstarter, and Gender Justice. Cultural events include speaker series, product demos, concerts from teammates, pre-release film screenings, and industry meetups. Kickstarter also celebrates "Continuous Learning — Curiosity is our compass. We welcome experimentation, failure, and the courage to try again."

Work-Life Balance

Kickstarter currently operates with a 4-day workweek — "a model that aligns with our belief in a healthy work-life balance and gives staff the space to be more than their work." Full-time employees receive 16 paid vacation days, 10 sick days, all paid holidays, and a company-wide winter break between Christmas and New Year. Each employee also receives 25 paid volunteer hours each year. Healthcare is fully employer-paid, parental leave is 16 weeks plus fertility and family-planning resources, and the 401(k) plan includes a 3% safe-harbour contribution. Salary transparency is the norm — JDs disclose specific US salaries (e.g. $145,658 USD for Account Director, Games).
